Well just wanted to say Hi to everyone and to get some possible help and questions answered.

I have a White Corolla Ascent 06 Hatchback ZZE122 and am from WA.

So far all ive done is replace the stock cd player thats a total pos (damn small displays and only like 15-30 characters...) With and Alpine CDA-9885 and its just insanly better sound and useability. Then a towbar, weathershields is all ive done so nothing extreme.

My questions are as follows whistling.gif

Ill also let people in on the fact that im a noob when it comes to cars. (Still on my P's and this is my first car so not too much laughing please)

I try not to thrash my car while driving but sometimes I either need to accelerate quickly or just feel like it. What is the limits that are good for the car, rpm wise from gear to gear. The most ive ever reved it from like 1st -> 2nd and 2nd -> 3rd is between 3-4k rpm and sometimes it feels like itd be too much to do anymore. People with non-sportivos what are your limits? Also when changing gears its very clunky and makes a bit of a noise and isnt 100% smooth when changing. Ive got my 12month service coming up and what to get an idea if its something that the service people can adjust or fix for me.

Next on the list. Im wanting to do a few things to my car to make it stand out a bit from the 1000's of other white corollas around tongue.gif. Ive enquired at a few places around Perth for some black rear lights as my next task and also those snazzy door sills look nice. Kinda happy with the power of the car as its more than I imagined it would be so mainly cosmetic.

I might save my next few questions for another topic another day. Any help or opinions will be great. Thanks guys and hopefully will be able to take part in some WA Get Togethers

Even if you bounce it off the rev limiter a couple of times it's okay... It's a common misconception that revving a car is bad for it. What's the deal with that?? The car is made to rev, rev it! You won't be seeing any decent power until 4000RPM so you'll find yourself up there freqently. I suggest you get a CAI and then you'll be revving it all the time just to hear the sweet noise.

As for the gearbox, that sounds about right. They're very notchy. If you think it's a problem ask the mechanic to change the gearbox oil. But the gearboxes are made to shift with two distinct clunks so it's foolproof

Very true thou, even for the 1zz u feel a slight push in the bum once u hit 3500 - 4000 rpm.. just slightly biggrin.gif and of course as Tayles said if u have the CAI u'd be listening to soothing music!

i have an 06 sedan.. changing gears at high revs will feel a bit clunky, especially with the stock shifter (my experiences) i personally dont feel the need to rev it up to 6k on the road?!

With the price of petrol these days you wouldn't want to rev it!
I've just recently realised how to keep the revs down, and its helping me save money.. whistling.gif yahoo.gif
Oh, but then again, I don't get to listen to the 'soothing music'.. hehe
wil_rolla
Tayles right... theres nothing wrong with abit of rev's...
i have a '02' white (yes me too!!!) corolla ascent sedan, non sportivo.

toyota has already found the limits of the car and it's engine, which is 6,200rpm,
so you should be fine with any thing under that..
shifting under 4,000 rmp is fine for every day driving but your missing out on all the fun!!! peek torque is at 4,200 rpm and peek power is at 6,000 rpm...
so don't be afraid of herting your car, as long as you maintain it...
but don't thrash your car untill your confident to do so wink.gif

A heavier gear knob (>400g) would help quite a bit with the gear changing.

I've currently got a TRD shortshifter, RAZO 480g gear knob, TWM shifter base & cable bushing and I love it. The heavier gear knob will help with the notchiness, which I don't mind actually cause it feels more solid.

I know it might sound newbie but you mean the gear knob as in the part you can just screw off or like the whole setup? Itd be nice if i just had to replace the actual knob part. Its something id be willing to try tongue.gif
MT
Yup knob should just screw on and off smile.gif
keifer33
Well after a quick read of this handy link

http://autospeed.com/cms/A_107829/article.html

Im sold on getting a new gear knob, off 2 ebay I go with mastercard in hand smile.gif

Get Waiwong's rear LED lights.

Cant stand the altezza's..

Other option is smoking the current ones.

I cant remember the last time i drove without hitting the rev limiter. 100,000 km's and still going strong tongue.gif
keifer33
Well went for a quick drive round the streets and the higher revs in 2nd gear managed to get between 5-6k but it kinda feels like the car is working too hard and wasnt game to do it much more. Its good to know my car can do it but I cant see it being good doing it all the time some how.

Also might have to shop around for gear knobs somemore tomorrow at some of the places around, online sucks cant find anything that isnt like $150-200 which is insane for a gear knob I think. If anyone can recommend somewhere in Perth that would be very good...or even online.

Thatd be great if you could mate. Only down the road from my work so can nip down during lunch.

Also got another newbie question.

The tires on my car are still going good (~14,000kms) and dont really wanna think about replacing them atm but wanted to look at getting some new rims as the stock ones are a bit meh and nothing too special. Is it possible to get some 16" 17" rims and keep the stock tires or will i need to get some new lower profile ones cause I like my big chunky tires tongue.gif
MR_ken
a tyre for a 15 inch rim wont fit on a 16 or 17.. if that is what u mean ??

Just imagine that ur rims is ur foot and ur tyre is ur shoe smile.gif if ur a size 8 2 yrs ago and size 10 now smile.gif i doubt u can fit into those size 8 shoes anymore smile.gif

bigger rims = bigger tyres but for the non-stivo the maximum legal size ur rim can go is 17" (correct me if im wrong)

the size thing varies from state to state.. ive seen 22's on clubsports here!
keifer33
LOL I sounded like a noob then, sorry late night post. Was more asking if I get 15" Rims they dont look overly stupid with the stock tires or should i just go all out for some 17"s and not so low profile tires?
Jay.
get 17's with low profile
and reving your car is a fun, addictive and it's a good way to stay in shape smile.gif
$ANGELO$
if you get 17's you need to get 215/40 or 205/45 tyres, to stay as close to stock rolling diameter as possible..
MR_ken
lol... if u get larger rolling diameter ur car will accelerate slower as the final gearing is changed.

it will also sit the car higher and raise its center of gravity.

seriously thel is no point in having big tyres and big rims...

ohmy.gif
MR_ken
eaqch time the rim size increases, the tyre size decreases.. most sensibal way.

oh just to spice this post up....

After not having any questions for a while...on my lunch break today decided to head down to a few tire places in perth to get an idea on the costs of getting some new rims and tyres, after nearly having a heart attack at the prices (ruffly $1600 for 4x17" rims and tyres) and looking at different brands (ANZ and Speedy) had some designs that I liked but I def cant afford that type of $$$'s and seens ive still got 5 nice treaded tyres I cant afford to not use. So had anyone reaplced the stock steelies with some 15" rims and kept the tyres. Or can someone recommend someone around the perth area that has managed to get some cheaper rim&tyre packages. I know im probly asking heaps for them too be under $1000 but really that is way over my budget.

The tyres on my current car are 195/60r15 but I dont know whether they would fit on 15 x 6.5 which is what im looking at in the brochure now. Im guessing they wont look as pimpin as some 17's but gotta be better than stock ones.

Also what size are the sportivo rims, im guessing 16's as I wouldnt be that lucky to pick up a 2nd hand set or 15's lol. Basically want to make my ride different without blowing holes in my wallet.

dont bother with most tyre joints down in perth (except for tech9) check out tempetyres.com.au and whtever u want.. bring it to tech9 and ask them to get them in.. a decent set of 17" is around 1200 smile.gif

decent set of 16 can be as long as 900 bucks..

these are all WITH TYRES
keifer33
Thanks kenneth, I will have to check em out when I get a chance to pop down.

Sorry im still trying to understand how all this works...

Basically the rolling diamater of the wheel between the normal wheels and say 17s is the same cause the 17 has more rim and less tyre where as the 15 has less rim and more tyre?

If so its not gonna look stupid if i repace the stock rims with some nicer 15s

Is there any huge benefit of going to 17 or even 16's apart from the obvious insanley good looks?
selyaT
If those sorts of prices scare you then forget about a massive wheel and tyre combo 'cos those brands are ratsh!t.

There are some insane deals on 15" wheels around if that floats your boat
