Decided to cut the left hand side fog light panel and here's the finished product

Care to explain a little more on the scenario. Did you do this because you wanted it to look 'better' or do you have a CAI an want to feed cool air to it?

you know a better and easier solution is just pull the foglight cover out and leave it open

I think it would have looked better if you just cut the bottom slit out. That way you have protection from the rain as well.
But good job nonetheless

'Rain' will not force itself up your intake and into your engine.

You would have to, at the very least, immerse your pod filter in water to even stall the engine, even then, you would most likely only get water in the intake manifold.

Trust me, been there, done that.
