An extremely graphic British short film intended to teach teenagers about the dangers of text messaging while driving has become a YouTube sensation.

The four-minute online version of the video, which has been labelled for 18-and-over only on YouTube, is an excerpt of a 30 minute video made for exhibition in British high schools.

Gwent Police Force in south Wales hired writer-director Peter Watkins Hughes to produce the $24,000 film.

"Yes it is violent, but the reality of a fatal road accident is much more gruesome, is much more violent," writer-director Peter Watkins Hughes told CBS news.

"My position on this is that if you are old enough to drive, if you are old enough to want to drive, you are old enough to be aware of the real and serious risks one places yourself in every time you get behind the wheel."

British authorities say texting while driving has been proven to be more dangerous than driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The majority of the comments posted on YouTube have been in support of the violent video.

"I think this video is just what everyone needs, it's not over-dramatized at all," a comment read.

"Everyone thinks 'it'll never happen to me' because we all think we're an exception and nobody else matters."
