Hey all some of you may know i was getting this

1987 AE82 Toyota Corolla Twincam

Chassis
300,600km
Engine
Replaced at 201,000km
4AGE Bigport 7 RIB TVIS (dead stock)

Purchase Price
$2,000 no RWC no REG

Vehicle itself
Dead stock smile.gif exactly what i wanted to find apart from
  • Key central locking
  • kill switch - hidden smile.gif
  • JVC CD / MP3 player, 6 inch fronts and 6x9 rear (so dont have to hassle doing that)

Vehicle History
I have basically every single document relating to the vehicle for its entire life.
  • Spent last night sifting through everything that i got with car and it is all in a folder now split into:
  • Log Book = 1987 - 1993
  • 1991 - 1993 grouped together, then specific section for every year after that within folder, cant wait to spend more time reading every little detail of what has been done
  • I am the 4-5th owner, i need to sift the papers better to be sure, from what i have seen last 2-3 owners were female (thus not thrashed) new motor went in 2001, $1250 fitted have reciept etc

Vehicle Condition:
For its age i would say its in very good original condition, paint is fairly good, no actual dints and it drives well.
Things that need fixing
  • Slight rust very minor top of windscreen and front left 1/4 panel behind mud guard
  • a few tiny scratches here and there just need a touch up pen
  • front bumper at front left is pusehd back around 1cm on left hand side, remove an straighten mounts and put back on
  • Color coding items back to orig condition - i.e. rear spoiler is white and door handles are white i think are supposed to be black
  • Temperature runs very cold when running when sitting it kicks up to norm, new thermostat as Andy (BKS) mentioned 4AGE like to run warm so will do this very soon.
  • A/C - hasnt worked for 6 years and last owners didnt worry, seeing it will be a daily its my priority after RWC done (booked in today)

What was recently done to car
  • Reco Dizzy
  • Reco CV's
  • Timing Chain
  • Service
  • Both Cam Seals and various others (dont have details with me at moment)
  • springs on inner door handles replaced
  • new rear muffler
  • a few other things ill update you on

What i plan to do
    [i]
  • Change all fluids, Engine oil and filter (Penrite HPR 30) - Brakes (Castrol Dot 4 Super) Gearbox oil Nulon 75w90 API GL-5 semi-synthetic

  • full clean of car in and out
  • fix tiny rust spots

  • re color code aspects
  • Paint rear muffler black
  • Monroe GT gas shocks and 4 springs (2 lovells, 2 unknown at moment) from wreckers total $32.00 Purchased Installed

What i love so far
  • Drives and handles brilliant for its age and even compared to current cars

yeah i thought that once but i dont think the sportivo will be as classic )(or as much of a)......might sound a bit bad but to me after only driving the AE82 twice now i dont feel they made that many improvements at all in the 20 + years lol, the power to weight in the AE82 twin cam feels great, engine is smooth, most of all its got the nice IRS and from seeing and reading other ppls posts spend up to 1k on sussy with springs/shocks/rearsway/bushed kit and it handles like on rails dog legging around every corner if you push it......

torque etc feels equiv in the AE82 to the sportivo and going up hills in 5th seems more effortless in the AE82 than the sportivo....prob due to gear ratios or something but just feels easier to drive as an everyday than the sportivo and there is just something about that old boxy shape and eclectic interior that appeals to me.

i went from 4AFE to 2ZZGE and now to 4AGE and even though only early i feel the 4AGE ticks the boxes better across the board ie, daily driving, power, torque (all car weight affected etc) and the powers there nice and linear you dont get the kick like sportivo (which i love.....) although not that sad that im losing it.

  • i guess when andy went old school it made me think a bit about it...older cars can play with them more, not as expensive still heaps fun and dependent on car a bit of a classic.
  • Fiance might be getting new job and company car so sell hers, if that happens then we can both repay heaps and get well ahead on house payments while interest rate low.
  • can pay off my hecs instead of a car
  • can save for wedding and honeymoon
  • another big factor i was getting a little bored with sportivo as it was where i wanted and couldn't justify paying for tune / turbo upgrade etc
  • save for next car...at moment thinking Subaru Forsester MY10 with MRT kit C added to it....nice 200kw @ wheels smile.gif

think thats most of the reasons

bonus.....clear car debt and have enough money to buy AE82 and afew k to spend on it smile.gif.....once i sell sportivo that is..........wink.gif

OMG nice car so clean they look the best in white
congrats on the buy
Kevsta
Nice car - I regret selling mine but needed something a little safer. I drove one for ten years or so and then sold it to an apprentice toyota mechanic for a bargain price of $2600. At the time it had 170K on it, but that was back in 2003.

Things to watch out for was rust around the front and rear windscreen, fuel lid, rear wheel arches. Other than that, the car was reliable, engine was bullet proof, an absolute joy to drive as it only weighed in around 900 kilograms.

jaderd
yeah i have very minor surface rust top middle of front windscreen - easy DIY fix.
minor rust that has hardly come through front 1/4 panel on left behind mud flap...will pre emptively attack that i think.

filler cap is zero rust etc checked that today as i pumped 40$ worth of BP ultimate into its belly...cheap to fill
mick.wheelz
very good reasons to switch to a classic... i guess you can even start getting your hands dirty with it too... smile.gif

yeh they are a great car i should get mine registered in the following week but yeh great car cheap to fill engines strong just one thing that is annoying is the bottom of the seats give way.

Hi all

extremely busy today. Went to pick pay n go wreckers and ripped every thing i wanted off the ae82 twin cam which they have in the locked away yard out the back guy was great and gave me key to it where i had to lock myself in the yard and not let anyone else in lol, only thing i wanted but could not get was the black door handles, could not open doors enough as car wedged in so was too tricky etc.

What i got

  • Rear Tail lights including loom and globes
  • Front indicator / parkers incl loom and globes
  • front bumper indicator lenses
  • rear bumper number plate light
  • rear spoiler - BLACK smile.gif
  • Steering wheel centre
  • Set of Genie Extractors
  • K&N Panel Filter

Such a bonus scoring the extractors and K&N filter....very Happy

Grand Total = $126 - Pick Pay n Go FTW!!! yahoo.gif

After that i figured i better get a thermostat / gasket and o ring and also gaskets for extractors

Went to Autobarn and came home with all this.......easier to show pic than list everything - including the shelf smile.gif

Grand Total = $311

Once home i started doing everything.

First of all i did the rear end so replaced the rear spoiler, number plate light, removed all stickers off window and added the rear tail lights, looks mint now.

old tail lights one was cracked and siliconed and other had water in it.

Rear before anything done

Rear Complete

Then i did the front indicators / parkers and also the bottom lenses, bottom lenses both had cracks and left parker had cracks so needed new ones for roadworthy

Engine as it is, Reco Dizzy and Timing belt just changed smile.gif

Then i rubbed back the headers with steel brushes...tedious and hard lol....wish i had bought a bit for my drill today but forgot so did it old fashioned elbow grease way. Three coats the VHT paint in OEM mild steel look, then i ripped out both seats and swapped over the bases as the passenger base is alot firmer and more bolstered, this way still get all the rear lumbar of drivers seat and now a nice solid base.

K&N Panel filter is all clean and drying overnight awaiting install tomorrow and will also install the headers tomoz and also the thermostat.
Have to break in the header paint by idling 10, then off, then 20, then off, then drive for 30 min.
Have got coolant and everything ready for it all tomoz

Also get to catch up with Andy (BlilndKidSeeks), he is going to do some work on his wagon

catch until tomorrow
D35
big project ahead! =p
jaderd
fair easy project so far really, have got all the stuff i need to remove and fix rust, paint rear muffler black..etc
jaderd
Today will be
- Remove and paint new muffler black / reinstall
- install headers
- Install K&N panel filter
- Install thermostat / new coolant etc
- fix (as good as possible as no windscreen removal etc) slight rust above windscreen and maybe pre emptively do the bit at front left 1/4 panel.....or do that another time
- Put spare tyre on front left so pass roadworthy, as front left was only one that is a fail, others are just legal, will do for now.
- Maybe use the meguiars swirl on the side strips to bring them back to white if i have the time

Also i noticed that my rolla has two thermo fans at the front, one the obviously sucks and one that blows as one before and one after radiator, the one at the wreckers only had one fan. What is the norm from factory ? is it dependent on year of vehicle ?

Guni
Good work simon!!!

Aircon. Power steering and air-con were both options on Twincams, so chances are you saw one without aircon at the wreckers.

Check behind that panel with the rust on it. If I recall, twigs, leaves and dirt channel from the openings near the bonnet hinges and get caught behind that area. It needs to get cleared out every so often.

One of the things that a mechanic from a performance workshop recommended to me was to get a can of carburettor cleaner and spray it liberally into the throttle body to clear out all the crap. If your idle isn't stable, this might be something worthwhile doing.

The genie extractors are quite good, I had a set, and I could feel a difference in torque even when running with a stock exhaust.
jaderd
Today Andy came over and i got to see his car in the flesh for the first time....great ride we installed roof racks on it to add to the 80's classic look........so much chrome you will go blind now.

On my car i put new thermostat and coolant in, then did the coke bottle method to ensure all bubbles out etc, after 30mins atleast the engine was getting hot but still no thermostat open and therefore no fan....it seemed though it should so to be safe took it out again, chucked it on the stove top and it openend so owe knew it was all good, put back in sealed (had managed to keep the radiator full of water/coolant) topped up with coolant and after leaving it for a fair while again it finally got up to temp and its all fine............atleast i know this car will not overheat easily i dont think. Just used a normal 82 degree thermostat.

Was going to do headers but ofcourse stock manifold has exhaust sensor in it so will have to get it done properly at exhaust shop Andy got me onto with sportivo so seeing i now have Intake (K&N panel) Headers i might as well do entire exhaust soon, basically once sportivo sold or earlier.

Made a new parcel shelf out of 19mm form ply left over from making dog kennels and i also need to make a new base for the boot as the old thin board is almost non existent.

Grabbed out spare and chucked it on for road worthy (its 175/65, rest are 185/60) should be fine for road worthy now as everything is done

Will book car in for ASAP and should be on the road very soon
smile.gif

nice ride, i was thinking of ditching my rolla for some thing older for similier reasons to you, but i kind of like the peace of mind a new car gives.
jaderd
yeah.....this car will never really leave 150km radius of my house and i have the basic RACV road side assist if ever needed......toyota are fair reliable though in general.
eviltwin
good work mate , having owned two 400k plus AE82's i can tell you they last forever if you keep them in good order! can't wait to check her out on the 30th!
jaderd
99% sure ill be there as this week i think she will be on road....ready to go now....

bonus is that the engine in the car is the one already logged with VIC roads smile.gif

Why do you think the thermostat isn't opening in the car? I'd be more inclined to think that either the temp switch or the wiring to the fan isn't working, because a car will get hot enough to open the thermostat _easily_, and if it doesn't open then the car will overheat very quickly (as there is NO cooling being performed).

Take the temp switch out and do the same stove-top trick with the thermometer as you do with the thermostat, and check that you get switching (either +12V going to ground or vice versa) at the right temperature
dorifto
Old school Corolla's last ages. When I first got my Toyota Corolla SX, I did a 1000 round trip to South Australia and back with rooted valve stem seals.

Anyway, Japerd if your after a muffler then I've got a Hi-Tech twin 2.5inch tip if you want. Doesn't fit my car as the outlet is on the wrong side.

nah its all fine as the wiring to the fan is deliberately set from factory so that if the switch is buggered the fan stays on as a safety measure, we disconneceted the fan and it came on straight away etc. All it was is that the car was not getting hot, bottom of radiator was cold, bottom pipe from thermostat to radiator was cold and top left (drivers side) radiator pipe had no pressure in it (not circulating) then once temp guage in dash did start to rise a bit all pipes were hot and pressurised (circulating) then about 30 seconds later the fan kicked in as the temp of water going past sensor was hot enough (guessing its same setting as thermostat or a little hotter -85-90 degrees ?) so it does all work perfect just that they take a while to get hot. After that we drove it around my estate for a while and it stayed at about one third temperature which is good as prior to this it only managed to just make the C unless i stopped in traffic

Thermostat we took out was stuck on open as suspected.

Also the second time around the coke bottle method worked perfect and for afew seconds the car revved up to around 2k (air lock) then bubble passed and it dropped to nice low idle around 600rpm or so. I think also now the wax pellet thing that senses when hot / cold for idle is working properly as it was idling a little high and it makes sense as engine was running very cold as radiator always open, therefore not melting pellet and not allowing it to idle properly

.....im slowly understanding things now lol.

So happy how it is.

DORIFTO - ill let you know....i want a fair quiet exhaust with just a bit of sound and zero droan, also thinking single tip dump ...not a big one though. will see though i may hit you up for it

Booked in tomorrow for 4 new tyres, Andy has same on his hightop wagon

mick.wheelz
score!
jaderd
yeah should be the goods.....just redrew all the money off my car loan ...lol that should cover tyres, rego and AC being fixed, makes it easier now so when i sell the sportivo its easier to pay out the loan
eviltwin
great work mate good to see your doing it right the first time.
jaderd
yeah trying not to rush things....although i want to go flat out and get everything done etc....i know if i do i will stuff something up wink.gif

So if i do bonnet rust and 1/4 panel rust tonght and tomorrow night and tyres tomorrow lunchtime then she should be all good for rego wed which i can handle smile.gif

The bonnet rust not sure if i can pull off the rubber or just flex it back while cleaning i will have to suss out, i can always do it with the rubber strip on car enough to pass roadworthy, basically spray some paint on and do a proper job of rubbing back whole bit above windscreen on weekend, ill see how it is when i look at it when i get home and assess whether to go full fix now, or layer of paint to cover for roadworthyness, tyres tomoz and maybe rego tomoz night then
jaderd
Spent yesterday evening repairing the:

  • Rust on roof above windscreen & both window edges that meet the bonnet (no rust on edges just painted them as afew scratches)
  • crack in paint / rust where paint missing next to left parker light assemble
  • rust in front left 1/4 pane (and removed approx 1.5kg of dirt from behind panel lol
  • afew little spots on drivers door that was missing paint

It all turned out ok, the strip i did above the windscreen is about 7-10 cm wide and looks alot brighter than rest of roof, had to do it this wide in order to be able to do a decent sand back of area etc, once i clean and cut/polish entire car it should not be as noticeable.

rust in 1/4 panel i rubbed right back, then stabbed the screwdriver through the few little holes to ensure cleaned it right out, rust converter, then filled it with the stuff i bought from autobarn the other day, rubbed back till i was happy with it and painted it. Came out quite well, im no professional with this sort of thing, basically wanted it done for roadworthy and does make it look alot better. Best part was removing the (with no exaggeration) 1-1.5kg of dirt and much that was between the body of car and 1/4 panel.....will do the same to the right hand side one night this week just for piece of mind knowing that it will drain properly from now on, drivers side has no rust.

So today she gets tyres on and in 25 mins ill ring and book in for the earliest appt available at vic roads smile.gif so should def be on road by weekend at very latest i think

will post up pics tonight

Cheers guys
Blind Kid Seeks
mad! cant wait to see it with plates.
jaderd
yeah ringing them in a tick....cant believe the amount of crud behind the panel.....enough to repot a small camelia i reckon lol

So today and have rang vic roads, the soonest appointment is Monday so have booked it for 3.35pm in bundoora. Bit annoying wait but means i can just keep doing stuff to it and make sure its spotless prior to appt, will degrease the engine aswell as have vacant block next to my house and can do it there.
jaderd
New Tread on, feels great and has lightened the steering a little $ tyres and wheel alignment for $445 im happy

new tread does make a massive difference i got new tyres of ebay so cheap and they are like new
ELEGNT
mate your really moveing along with the little twinny, great work. post some more pics soon
jaderd
yeah ill post some when i get home tonight, its basically done now re. road worthy, all i have to do is get new wiper blades (even though these seem perfect, Road worthy guy said we have to pick something as its 22 years old but everything was fine so we said blades as an extra) clean of car in and out and degrease some oil that is around from before the dizzy go reco'd
jaderd
Hi All,

Pics from last night when did the rust and some painting and fixed a few chips etc

came out ok, can def see on roof where i painted the first 7-10cm, i think it will blend better once i cut and polish whole car etc.

The rust in 1/4 panel came out ok, im not an expert on any rust repair so i am fair happy at result, its not 100% flat etc but worked ok.

Also made new parcel shelf as old one ***** and cracked....

Bought wiper replacement, not just the blade as whole mechanism had too much play.

And new tyres are on with a wheel alignment to boot smile.gif

enjoy

cruzer
i need a parcel shelf but not really sure how to make one
jaderd
do you have your old one ? just grab a mate with one and trace it onto butchers paper then onto your craft wood when you get some, just need the orig bracket to screw onto the back so the little round bits clip into the back.....could always fabricate something up if you dont have orig cross bar
johnnieboi
Niceee. Old school. Some of these old classics go hard for a long time, just need to fix a few little things here and there. Much more appreciation for it at the end of the day too i guess. I would love to get and old ae86 and make it my home project. I just dont have the space. Good work and good luck
