my 5 cents:
when you next service your engine and transmission oil, feel the toyota's engine / transmission oil and then feel the synthetic oil (e.g. castrol).

the synthetic oil feels much smoother, lighter [viscocity]
MRGEN3
i dont go any thicker than 5W with my oils
besides toyota's genuine oil is just castrol anyways so whats so genuine about it

its just sponsorship
also you can opt for full synthetic oil when you get your service done and they will use there genuine oil HEHE
vitagen
i use castrol synth r 5w30
lucio_libre
I was gona try and use Mobil 1 10w30 fully synthetic, but it was $75 bucks. Isnt the 0w40 a bit too thin for our engines?
coladuna
I use Motul 5W40 oil. I think it's semi-synthetic. It's the only oil I've used since the 1000km service so can't really comment on it yet.
DANZZT231
If it's the silver Mobil, yeah the car felt sluggish with it. I used silver Mobil Synth S with 10w40 and that's exactly what happened. But, don't worry, it'll be ok.
lucio_libre
Thats why I'm giving it heaps, to thin it out a little laugh.gif laugh.gif . Next time i'll try the fully synthetic, the Castrol 0w40 Formula R.
vitagen
use 5w30!

=P

its pretty cheap @ 4x a bottle

and yeah its perfect for our engine
Cooley
Using ELF Full Synthetic 5W30.........runs well and smooth~
Much much more than **** Toyota Geniune semi synthetic crap

i used motul 10w40(i think not 100%certain on that now) full synthetic once before and i was pretty happy with it

BUT then somone made a comment that motul and the vvti motors dont go that well together
even though i never experienced any problems i wasnt willing to take the risk for in the future

so seeing as though castrol and toyota are in sponsorship together im gonna start using full synthetic castrol oil

yet to go shopping to find the exact 1 im going to use yet hehe
but i assure you it will no higher than 5w or lower than 30

cheers

Hey Lucio, go 2 rounds of the mobil1. you got the right weight for our cars IMO. When i first changed over to it, the car was sluggish and it drank 0.5L over 4,000 k's!! When I went for the second change at 10,000k it came back superb and really flexible up top.

Where do u find Mobil 1 Gold 10W-30?

All stores I've looked sell the 5W-50 only...

Do u use a higher viscosity oil now that it's summer?
mx83toy
I have experimented a little with 0W and 5W and found the 40 mobil gold to be the best especially with summer comming on so strong! but year i found ever so slightly more power with the thinner oils but engine ran noisier and rougher im now sticking to the gold 10W-40W much smoother...
specialized32
this is a good read http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html i was going to put in Mobil gold when my 1k service hit but still weary on that and might stick to whatever they change it to. I love mobil oil been using for years but i got this list when i did a search on there site of oils the reccomend. Talk about variety but i know i wouldnt be touching the xhp or hp blends. Might go mobil 1 10W-30 TOO MANY CHOICES!!!

MOBIL 1 10W-30 or
MOBIL SYNTH S 10W-40 or
MOBIL SUPER S 10W-40 or
MOBIL 1 5W-50 or
MOBIL SUPER XHP 15W-40 or
MOBIL SUPER HP 20W-50 or
MOBIL SUPER GF-2 10W-30
RedLiner
My toyota dealer uses Castrol Magnatec...

also when i change the oils every 5000 i use castrol magnatec...

i got a cousin who works for holden so he gets the oil....its fully synthetic...i cant remember what grade.

i use castrol synth r 5w30

Ditto, but I notice that this oil discolours more quickly (ie. doesn't 'last' as long) as whatever my dealer uses. I might try Mobil 1 at my next change, but also I don't want to use a 0W oil, especially in Summer.

Discoloring might suggest that the oil was cleaning up the engine ? something it was meant to do

im due for a new oil change
cos its been abuot 7000 km
and i can feel the car is not at its prime!

but yeah the synth r is quite cheap at 36 bux a bottle ( super cheap 20% storewide )

this is going to be my second lot of oil !

I went to my Autobarn to look for the Mobil 1 'gold' 10w40 but what they had was the gold Mobil 1 Super

Synthetic 10w30. Are they relatively similar?
Red_CT9A
Mobil 1 Gold Super Synthetic does not come in 10W40.

Either 10W30 or 0W40

A few members including myself are using 10W30, which is the recommended grade from Toyota.

Car runs great, no dramas smile.gif

Around $90 for a 5L (ZZE123 takes around 4.7L i think)

.. you guys are lucky that they at least using a semi - synthetic at your dealers in AUS. In South Africa they use a 20W 50 - Castrol GTX 2 mineral oil :-(

i have recently changed to castrol edge 10W 60 - car is smoother through the rev range but a bit noisy on idle.

Really, do they use the GTX2 when they off the production line too? Its interesting to know!

The car is due for a service tomorrow, my dealership will only use semi-synthetic, load of crap.

buy ur own man! supply ur own oil its cheaper

my 20k and 30k service cost me about $160 cos i supplied my own oil.

my dealer uses magnatec, it works out to be the same price as my fully synth oil i supplied!

I'll probably get my car serviced on Tuesday. Already have Castrol Formula Synthetic oil (5W30) waiting in my garage. I'll see how it differs from Motul after I get the service done, althought I doubt I'll be able to notice any significant differences.

just had Mobil 1 10W-30 in the 5000km service biggrin.gif

Just bought Castrol Magnetac 5w30 from Autobarn today for my 30k service tomorrow. Will post up my thoughts after the service.

as long as the oil is within the normal operating limits as specified by toyota in the car manual then nope it wont void ur warrenty.

For the record im a royal purple man myself http://www.royalpurple.com/prodsa/rpmoa.html ... and before anyone asks .... yes the colour of the oil is actually purple tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

Well, had my 30k service yesterday and I supplied them with Castrol Magnatec 5w30. So far I like it. Didn't think that it would make that much of a difference to the car but it has. Revving now feels a lot smoother than before and engine seems to be a little quieter.

How much did the 30K service end up costing you?

I ask for a wheel alignment to be done ($60) so in the end it cost me $288 in total.

Dont know much about this new Castrol Edge stuff yet but the 0w-40 version is recommended for the 2zz-ge in Castrol's online lube guide.

I'm currently running Castrol Formumla R 5w-30 and thinking of making the switch as Castrol no longer recommend the Formula R for the 2zz-ge.

I find it funny that Castrol recommends different oils from time to time based on their current product range.
Marketing stunt?!?

I did my oil change this morning and put Castrol Edge sport 5w-30 fully synthetic in. Nearly did my socket set in because toyota service tighten the sump plug nut way too tight. I had to end up using my foot and body weight to get it off. Fortunately the oil filter came off okay.

Anyway, Lift is definitely stronger with this stuff in it and engine idles noticeably quieter and runs smoother. I just hope it lasts as the normal castrol oil that Toyota uses in it's servicing last for about 1000ks before you can feel it getting rough as gear changes aren't as smooth.
