  1. These are photos of the underside of my car. The first two pics are the right rear panhard rod bush. The scratch marks are just from my fingers. The third pic are the rear trailing arm bush. Not sure how difficult it will be to replace both but I'm going to do it anyway. Hard to get these parts in Australia. Any clues as to where I can get them. All the major chains, Bursons, Repco, S'cheap, Autobarn, dont' sell them. Panhard rod bush. Rear trailing arm bush.
  2. This is not my car. These are photos i got from the internet. Would the right trialing arm bush make noise when turning left? Would the right panhard rod bush make noise when turning left?
  3. The coil springs and rubbers look bran new. I believe they were replaced a couple of years ago according to the paperwork from the previous owner. It's not making noise from the up and down bouncing of the car I've found. I thought it was. It seems to be when the car is rocked and moving at the same time. The noise only appears when I turn left (from the right rear). I'm a little confused about the parts under the car so i was hoping you all could take a look at the parts I've posted below and tell me if they could make the noise. The first part runs behind the rear cross strut (I believe it's called a Panhard Rod). Picture below. You can see a yellow ruber where it joins to the hub just behind the wheel. I thought this could possibly cause a noise when turning left. As for the second image, I'm not sure what you call this, but I can see a rubber inside the join. It is where the two rods coming off the rear cross strut attach to the underside of the car. Does anyone know what this is called and would the left join make noise when turning left? LATE ADDITION: I THINK THIS IS CALLED THE TRAILING ARM. THE TRAILING ARM BUSHING COULD NEED REPLACING? WHAT DO YOU THINK? Thanks
  4. Is it possible to get a creaking noise from worn rear sway bar bushes ? I have a 1999 toyota starlet 3 door hatch.. Still diagnosing the problem but I think this could be it. Is there any real need to replace the sway bar if there's a creaking noise or just the bushes? I'm yet to see how it works down there.

  6. Thanks, but are there different grades of shocks? You have stated that there is 'Standard' shocks. What would be considered non standard? For example. I'm guessing there may be a grade of some kind. Like, 'Soft', 'Medium or Standard', 'Hard' ? It's a toyota Starlet so if I could minimize roll in the body on corners should I get a harder shock if they are available?
  7. Ok, thanks.. but is there different grades of shocks? Softer / harder/ etc... or are they supposed to be all the same? Also, the hydraulic action in the shocks.. is there differences in how they work and are some better than others.. For example, air shocks, liquid hydraulics.. Clearly I know nothing about shocks.

I will be replacing the rear shocks in my Toyota Starlet 1999 model soon (Right rear shock is creaking when I drive over uneven road and sit in the car when stationary, just when I put weight in the car) and am not sure what to get. I don't know if I can fit only one kind of shock or are there several types for this car? I will probably carry all my tools in the back which adds to the weight in the back of the car. I'm currently noticing that the car really bounces up and down if I go over large speed humps too quickly. Maybe something a little firmer would be better but I'm not sure if I even have that option. Can anyone advice me on choosing the right REAR SHOCKS for my 1999 Starlet 3 door hatch? Thanks
  9. I will soon have to replace the rear wheel bearings on my Toyota Starlet which is a front wheel drive vehicle. As I have only had rear wheel drive cars in the past I'm not sure how to change the rear wheel bearings on a front wheel drive car. I have some questions about this process. 1 - Does anyone have any pictures of the rear hub assembly? 2 - Do I need a bearing press or any special tools to remove the old bearings and replace the new bearings? 3 - Exactly how many bearings will I need for each side? Is it just one bearing or two on each side? 4 - If anyone has any instructions on how to go about this process (FOR A STARLET 1999 model) it would be much appreciated if you could maybe give me some tips on how this is done. Thanks very much.
  10. Well, just for the record, the job is done now. You need to drop the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold. It has a reusable connicle casket so there's no need to go out and get a new one. It just bolts straight back on and fits perfectly with no exhaust leaks. As for the sump, unlike some early model Toyotas, the Toyota Starlet sump comes straight off after undoing the bolts holding it on. It was quiet easy. For a long time I thought I had a rear crank seal leak, despite the fact that I replaced it, and it still seemed to be leaking. It turns out that it wasn't the rear crank seal at all, but the sump gasket was leaking. I used gasket maker for that job. This type of sump must be susceptible to leaks around the curves both at the front (around the crank wheel) and the rear (very close to the rear crank exit point). After fixing the sump leak there is absolutely no more leaks. Very happy with the result. I might add that being a small car the sump sits rather low and maybe the scrape along the bottom of mine is an indication that the sump can move a little if it hits the ground (when doing something unusual in your car like straddling the gutter). I have looked at several Toyota starlets before buying this one and they all had a leak which appeared to be coming from the rear crank seal. It seems that it is equally as likely that those leaks could have actually been coming from the sump. I hope this helps someone.
  11. Hmm. Thanks for replying. I think we're talking about the opposite sides of the engine. I'm at the rear just near the rear main seal. I think the oil pump is near the front crank seal if I'm correct? Let me know if I'm wrong.
  12. Does anyone know what needs to come off to remove the sump on a Toyota Starlet Life 1999 model? There is a leak coming from the curved part where the sump meets the engine. I first thought it was the rear crank seal but I have now replaced that and the leak is still there (frustratingly as this was a big job). I did everything right. It's on the curve so I believe that this is the most common place for a leak. There is also a gash on the bottom of the sump where the previous owner has hit the pavement or a rock. This could have thrown out the sump positioning. Maybe just warped the seal. Does this happen? Picture Attached. I've now forgotton what else needs to come off to remove the sump? Has anyone managed to do this without removing the exhaust? Thanks
  13. Would anyone know how well a Toyota Starlet Life (2 door version) will tow a box trailer. I understand the unbraked towing capacity of an unbraked trailer is 350kg which doesn't sound like very much. Braked it is 650kg. All I want to do is fit towbar to my starlet for towing a box trailer when moving stuff in and out of storage. Has anyone done this? I used to have a ke70 and managed to tow a 8x5 box trailer with it. It worked fine. Not sure about the starlet though because they're quiet a small car? Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks
