  1. I've made an error--I re-assembled my 5L without closely checking the piston clearances, and I now find No#4 cylinder firing intermittently and with huge blowby, and a loud cam speed knock from back of block. Suspect piston clearance too great. Unwilling to pull down until I can source a single new piston -- proving very difficult, anyone got one lying about or knows source at reas price? OEM NOT required. Set not needed.
  2. Ding noise suggests shock absorber cover or similar thin metal being hit. Can you tell if noise forward or aft the driver? Check around fuel tank area, If necessary remove tray to have clear vision. Be sure it's not spraying gravel? check center brg on tailshaft for excess play and the shield on the cv joint there for clearance to the shaft. Are the new shocks correct fit for your vehicle series, or generics for any raised vehicle/hilux? Suspecting oversized bodies etc?
  3. Higher/faster gearing INCREASES damaging torque stresses in gearbox, thus be careful. Can overheat motor with increased load 5L not recommended for turbo. Gets too hot too easily. Other posters indicate piston failures with turbo. New motor made to turbo 3.0L diesel. Hilux never made as powerhouse-not suited to that purpose, tho many have spent much, few actually seem to succeed. Nissans have bigger engines, bodies for same year, and I would expect them to have more power, but if you really want/need a tojo, then you'll have to just lump it. Silk purses/pigs ears come to mind. My LN147R has more than enough power for my driving, and I could easily live on <60KW diesel if it were still available in a 'lux without efi. I was actually quite happy with an L motor with sidecam/rockers in a 1.4T hilux. It was very good.
  4. 5 alternator connections--Earth (via mount bolt.) 2 wires for brushes, 1 wire for alt light, Major +ve charge wire under nut with ring terminal. Charge light wire is direct, if no opperation test for break or bad earth, damaged instrument cluster cct board?
  5. It's from the banner messages on this page. no email involved. I've never done more than 1st click to read what the msg is about, then I get out. Just irritates me that they aren't willing to take ignore as a don't bug me. edit closer reading shows it to be a google advert--i'll get an adblocker.
  6. I keep getting messages that I've won a (travel) prize on this site. I ignore them, as I don't trust them, and since I can't afford to go anywhere atm, they're just an annoyance. Anyone else plauged by this rubbish?
