deisel all the way i get 9l/100km adverage consumption out of my hilux its never gone over 10l/100km good luck trying to get any where near that out of a petrol ute (utes arnt designed to be efficent as they are designed to hual loads so the gearing is lower so they rev higher at free way speeds) so as deisels are an efficent motor it makes up for the unefficent ute gearing

i have a friend with a hilux same as mine only in the v6 and he was like bullsh## when i told him my fuel comsumption his adverage consumption is over 13l/100km

and another thing about diesel is its cheaper the petrol atm so all +'s for the deisel

Actually, 5th gear will normally be a lot longer ratio than most non-commercial vehicles, my girlfriends dads Navara does 100km/hr at approx. 2500rpm while for my car it's around 3100rpm. The main reason the petrols use more fuel is they generally have bigger displacements compared to the diesels (which are normally turbo to boot)

Newer LPG systems are a complete world of difference compared to the older systems, not only that a lot of people are running a shot of LPG into their diesel-engined vehicles for around 25% better economy and 25% more power to boot. If you do a lot of kms, this can pay for itself in a year or two.

Regardless, newer turbo diesels are the absolute shiznit. Easy to extract more power/fuel economy out of without spending huge dollars, and buttloads of torque down load is what makes driving fun.

I can get 10.5L-11.5 \100 km from a 2.7 VVTi 2007 workmate. I know the diesel engined version D3 turbo can get arnd 9L\100km and that seems attractive. But you probably have to weigh up the other factors, of regular servicing and parts replacement. I think if you were doing a lot of long distance trips per year the diesel option would be better, I did a calculation when I bought the Hilux and I would have to do 200,000 km before the initial outlay for the diesel variant broke even on the cost of fuel burned. For some that may take 20 yrs before they can recoup the extra $ of the diesel vehicle purchase.

For some, the smell of diesel is objectionable and it seems to get every where on you at the pump no matter how careful you are. As for the pump price, I know there was a period in this country when the price of diesel was greater than that of unleaded due to the boom in the mining industry and market forces of supply and demand.

The 1990 circa hiluxes (non turbo) where real fuel sippers and could go a long way without stopping for a drink but they lacked power. I think If you rate fuel economy over power, an early hilux running on bio-diesel would make the fkn taxman weep.

LPG is soon to loose its tax exemption and you will see a price increase in this arena, investers in LPG conversions are about to learn about social engineering orchestrated by Governments and lobbyists.

Just wait till Gillard folds to the do-gooder Greens to keep her lily white butt outa the political wilderness, and slaps a Carbon tax on fuel burning.

I guess what I am saying is welcome to the wonderful world of consumerism tempered with the political influences of what you drive .

Cheers !

Hi friend,

A gas conversion on my hilux 99 saved me lots. It's a 2.7L and the gas tank fitted under tray was good choice.

It's a 50Ltr tank and i do around 300kms per tank which is $32 to $35 each time quite effecient.

Only one trick mate because it runs dry you need to run some petrol sometimes to clean the system, also in winter i find it start harder when cold. So run it for 3-4mins before on petrol before you switch it off to leave it overnight i found it starts better in the morning.

was that helpful!!

Gas is dangerous. Nuff said. Diesel is safest and cheapest kwhr/L. ( abt 3.3-3.6 1990-2010) petrol motors are cheap to fix. All forms of EFI are unreliable, IMO. A diesel will always start more reliably than petrol as spark ign is unreliable by comparison. If Ur life depends on Ur car going, Go diesel.
