Oil Change on 2009 Kluger

Hi Guys,

I've got a 2009 model KX-S AWD 7 seater in Graphite.

Just had the complimentary "1,000km safety inspection" and I want to change the oil and filter (because Toyota didn't  )

I bought the filter from Toyota, but I noticed it is a paper filter and the instructions suggest that you need an SST to remove the filter assembly to change it.

Does anyone know if it is possible to change the filter without a fancy SST? I've got a (normal) oil filter removal tool and sockets. An idea of how much work is involved would be good too.

PS - Planning to run mobil 1 as per Rice Racing's recommendation ;)

Thanks,

Matt

I assume you have the 2GR-FE correct. To remove the filter cap you just need a standard 64mm cap-style oil filter wrench. You can find these online for around $10, otherwise just ask around some automotive stores. The 64mm ones can sometimes be harder to find. If so, the 65mm ones are said to work alright as well.

Yep 2GR-FE 3.5l V6, same as yours I suppose

The filter remover I have is a claw type which uses a square socket drive, sounds like it should to the job.

I think I read somewhere that Kluger uses 6.1 litres for oil change. Does that sound right?

I know that oil filter tool that you are referring to. I don't see why it wouldn't work (just bear in mind that this style may be tighter), but I can't guarantee that it will do the job cleanly. With traditional oil filters, you could afford to wreck them on the removal process. With the one on the 2GR though, you don't want to mess it up.

And that is correct. 6.1 litres on a drain and fill with the oil filter change.

Dude, make your self familiar with my posts and threads, search is your friend :) I talk about this topic at length ;)

e.g.

Have you tow your FD yet?

I am living in an unit and do not have space for a lightweight trailer, so I had to hire one that is 650kg. The car is nearly 1300kg and it is just ok to tow....

I will try to get some oil change every 5000km. So the Toyota is semi synthetic... how much do I need for oil change again?

No I am in process of purchasing a trailer to suit the FD... IF this proves too difficult or costly I may make my own. SO now towing as yet. Yeah Toyota use a semi synthetic oil (depending on dealer, each has their own contracts with various suppliers, Valvoline, Castrol or Mobil etc) none will use full synthetic of the grade like 0W-40 as its simply far too costly for them (cant cover it in $150 fixed price and pay for shop hourly rate *NOT LABOR COSTS!* read below! *).

As an idea @ wholesale you need $80 ~ $100 worth of oil alone to do the change inc filter amount (6.1 liters) without filter I think its 5.7lt and totally dry engine its around 7lt or so...

* The oil any dealer will use will only cost them about $20 per 6lt !!! add a $6 filter on top and the KENTS are making a fortune each time you take the car in ($112 profit!!!) to pay an apprentice $12 for 1 hours work to change your oil and to TRASH your car around the block "to test it"

So I look at it this way, I buy the BEST oil money can buy, take much more care than any apprentice will working on my own car and do the job properly and it costs me about $50 LESS than if I went to my dealer + my car does not get FLOGGED by some young KENT in the name of a "test drive" :toast:

(Below is e-mail today from a company I enquired about the tool to remove the oil filter body assembly and the reply they gave me RE new part number etc... my local dealer is giving me one for $41.05 and I am picking it up tomorrow, but this is the go for anyone else interested or if they want to hit up their local dealer wanting this part and getting a crap answer from the spares department

Hi Peter,

Part number 09228-06501 has been discontinued.

It has been replaced by 09228-06500-02

65MM across flats, 14 flats.

We don't have this part in stock, but can get one from the US in about 3 - 4 weeks from order.

Price including delivery and GST would be $36.56, but would need to be pre-pay as you don't have an account with us.

Normally, cash sales would have to exceed $250.00, but I can make a bit of an exception!

Curiously, we have the same product under a different part number, that is in stock ex-MEL, but three times the price.

So if you have to have one now, it would cost $66.30 incl. delivery & GST.

Any questions, don't hesitate to email me.

Thanks,

Pete.

Thanks RR - I was waiting for your input ;)

I read your topic beginning to end, but didn't get an impression of whether the filter could be readily changed without the SST, which is why I asked the question. Also I considered posting in your thread about it, but that would have been a bit OT and didn't want to hijak your thread.

Anyway - still wondering whether it is practical to change the oil filter without the SST. I don't really want to buy a special tool because all future oil changes will be done during services (car is leased), only need to do it this time because Toyota don't do it in the 1,000km service.

Thanks for the advice!

*edit* just found the following link that has lots of good information and procedures in it

Apparently the US Camry V6 uses the 2GR-FE as well!

Take your car to Toyota and ask them for an oil and filter change... Should be around the $100 mark...

Will save you having 4 litres of left over oil and a tool that you're not gunna use again...

Unless you plan on doing the 5,000km oil changes yourself???

I suggest you buy the tool, I did and I have all the other tools described and decided to not do it the easy way.

You will enjoy it and have the knowledge that the job is done right and you have used the premium oils for the same or less cost than the rip off department :)

Had a quick look tonight. Looks like there is a plastic cover to remove to access the filter?

Not sure what I will do re:servicing (only had the car 2 weeks!) so may end up buying the tool and changing oil regularly (5,000km) myself. Then take it somewhere for major (10,000km) services.

I know what I WON'T be doing: taking it to Toyota so that an apprentice can put in cheap generic Toyota oil and charge me $100/h labour for the privilege ;)

Did the oil and filter change today - was very easy.

There is a small plastic cover over the filter housing which you remove with 2 x 10mm bolts.

Filter housing came off while trying to undo the cap. I think the filter housing would have to be done up very tight and the cap quite loose for it to come off as it does in the instructions. Not a problem to do it this way, just a bit messier.

Didn't need to use a filter wrench but I am sure my socket drive generic one would have done the job. Don't think I would bother spending $50 on the SST for it.

Added 6 litres of oil and the level read too high on the dipstick so may not have drained 100% of the oil.

Much easier than oil/filter change on my GT4 anyway!

I work at Toyota and I can assure you we don't use cheap oil or let apprentices thrash cars around the place...

LOL! :D :D :D

Now I understand why you suggested taking it to Toyota. Most car enthusiasts would never suggest that :P

Unfortunately my experience (and many others) with my local Toyota service dept. would suggest otherwise ;)

Hi Guys,

Just looking for some spoon feeding here, could someone give me a step by step guide on how to change the Oil in the kluger, or direct me to someone's topic where it is discussed,

sorry about asking such a basic question and taking the topic to a amateur level.

Just check out the link that I posted above:

Instructions

There is a link to a PDF in there that has step by step instructions with photos:

Instructions

Also a youtube video that shows you step by step:

Don't be worried that instructions are for an Avalon/Camry. The engine and the process is exactly the same to the Kluger.

If you have problems with it, we are here to help :toast:

I just had my 1000km comp inspection and managed to pay $81 for oil change/new filter, can't complain about that.

Oil filter was about $20, so I suppose you are paying about $60 for the oil and labour.

Pretty good if they do it right and the oil is OK quality. Not sure who makes that "Toyota Genuine" oil?

My oil/filter change cost me about $150 to do myself, but that was with Mobil 1 fully synthetic.

We use the Genuine Toyota Oil from the drums but thats only Gearbox and Diff Oils... I'm not too sure who is the manufacturer or distributor, never read the labels lol...

Engine Oil, Diesel Engine Oil and Automatic Oil is all supplied by Caltex to us...

Hi there,

Can someone please advise with the specifications of engine oil grade of Toyota Kluger Grande 2009 4x4 (2GR-FE). Please suggest best brand for it. I do not have extensive knowledge regarding the same but keen to develop a bit.

Thank a lot.
