hey guys i have a 99 hilux and a 2001 hilux both 2.7 petrol, i heard up to 2000 hilux were made in japan and after that the engines were made in tailand or somewhere, the 1999 model will do a burnout of the line it has that much power! but the 2001 barely makes it up hills sometimes its like it looses all power and once it reaches about 4000 revs it takes of like power band, i was wondering if any of you guys managed to fix ur 01 model problems? if so what was the problem?

Very strange!!! last Thursday night i was driving over a rough road when the hilux lost a lot of power and could barely get up a slight slope in the road. Next morning it was running OK but there was a picture of an engine on the display. Took it to the mechanic but warning light went out just before I arrived.

Now it is running better than it has for a long time - something strange is happening beneath the bonnet.

Hi I have a 99 hilux 4x2 purchased brand new by me in early 2000 , my car has 290,000 k's on it , it burnt out an intake valve at 89,000 other than that has been a reliable car but for the last 3 months or so it has been idling like a hairy goat and sounds like it has an exhaust leak/burnt exhaust valve when cold but when it warms up this noise disappears ? Strrange has me stumped also at low revs under labour it will miss fire , the engine has lost no power and still has the 3500rpm "powerband" it will pull 80kmh in second and 125kmh in third I have redback extractors , k&n air filter plus 2 hiclones fitted , I read with interest of the recourring problem between 3RZFE owners , I am hoping it isn't exhaust valve ( the intake valve fix cost me $3500+ nearly 10 years ago !) Although I have read on another forum that my problem can be caused by tired coil packs , so I am going replace them leads and plugs and see what happens , keep you posted ..............

Hi. This might not help at all, but for what it's worth, it sounds like it's getting a guts full of air. I don't know how this works with the Toyota hilux, but I had a Nissan 720 ute that was doing this, and had everyone stumped. One guy said new engine needed. Nearly got hit by a bus one day. Would cruise along ok, but at low speed, put the foot down, and no go. Anyway the problem turned out to be the PCV valve. It was stuck open. A guy with a home tuning business found it by hooking up the magic pipes, and analysing the mixture etc. I had fitted a new PVC valve, but it was a dud. These things are frustrating. I went to several mechanics who charged 80 bucks an hour for their expertise, and got nowhere for over a year. I know the 720 ute is a completely different animal, Not even fuel injected, but could put you on the right track. Good luck, johnbclay.

Turned out the accelerator pedal electronics were not working properly. Replaced it and it is fine.

Too much thought too many trips to local mechanics and should have gone to Toyota - the computer had listed all the issues which the local mechanic could not read.

I do know this forum is quite old but I have an answer

I own a 2.7 2004 hilux with acceleration hesitation it

Has had it since new. Now this ute was council owed

And was my drive car and by chance i happened to buy

It so the council mechanics couldn't fix it, Toyota couldn't

Fix it neither could holden or ford BUT I found a mechanic

Who works miracles and has fixed it at zero cost!!!!

Now to fix it open your diagnostic box under the bonnet

Look at the top left hand corner you may see a tiny

Bridging pin pull that out and it's done!! Just drive it so

Management system can settle itself out. What that bridging

Pin does is... The engine is self timing when they first build

The engine the put the pin in to "lock" the timing so when the

Engine tries to self times it can't they forget to remove the pin.

Hey try it see how you go my hilux is a new car beautiful

To drive with alot more hp as a bonus.

Your driving technique could use some improving. Full throttle from low rpm is no way to drive economically, environmentally nor practically. I call such eople <Lead Feet>, too unskilled to realize that there is an ideal maximum amount of throttle to increase speed with from any rpm/load. CV carbs will always sit on the ideal throttle for the rpm and load, but they re slow response. EFI will just chuck in fuel according to a formula, which may have some restraint to reduce pollution. Excess fuel in a moden petrol vehicle will result in unburnt fuel in the exhaust--this typically burns in the catalytic converter, where the excess heat melts the core in it, requiring replacement. An expemsive item you're not allowed to buy used. I'm not saying you don't have a flat spot-I'm saying you need to learn how to drive better and, sick motors should not be flogged along-<things> can go terribly wrong.

Hi guys. I recently visited the forum in search of answers for my 3RZ that performs badly. In africa we call our pickups with the 3RZ engine a Hilux but overseas ofcourse you guys know it as the Tacoma I believe. I've read a couple of diagnoses on poor performance etc on the 3RZ but could not realy pinpoint my problem. I did however replace the ECT(engine coolant temperature) sensor and right away the engine fired up and was ticking like a Rolex. Before I had to start the vehicle 10-15 times before it would idle and then it stil would misfire like it was running on 2 cylinders or as if the valves was leaking or bad plugs, plug wires etc. Couldn't believe that the ECT made such a big differance. Hope this can be of help for someone with any coldstart, misfiring symptoms, poor acceleration, bad feul economy, powerloss problems on the 3RZ. I Have to mention that the Hilux performed better when it was eventually up to operating temperature but still not as good as it should be. With the sensor replaced the Hilux is now powerfull and a pleasure to drive. Regards. Feel free to send me a mail if any of you have questions as I dont look at my notifications that regularly. jpcmeyer@gmail.com

The Tacoma is a North American (and a few other isolated countries) pickup/ute and is not the same as the Hilux (although it is related).  Most of the world (including Australia, where this forum is based) got the Hilux.

Also, this thread is 9 years old, and the last post in it was 3.5 years ago.

I just bought a 99 'Lux with a 3rz-fe.

It was running super lean (you need full throttle to get enough power to drive it, and massive amounts of backfiring through the intake at any other throttle setting), and the previous owner swapped out fuel filters, fuel injectors, ignition leads.
I don't know what else he swapped out, but that is what I can see.

I clamped the fuel return line from the regulator and it seemed to run normally, if a bit rich.
So I replaced the FPR. It didn't help.

I took the MAF out and cleaned that, which helped.
I can drive it now, but she is still really lean - it will still pop back up the intake from time to time. Full throttle is a lot smoother but it is still lean everywhere.

I have checked PVC for leaks, all the vacuum plumbing I can see, and checked the intake tubing post MAF.

I dont seem to have an 02 sensor, and I cant find any calibration data to check if the MAF/TPS is correct.

Can someone help me chase this ghost out??

HI Guys, turned out not to be the pedal problem that Toyota suggested as the problem was still there. Toyota had another look and threw their hands up.

My mechanic suggested a local specialist in car computers and I took it to him. He said he wasn't sure but thought it was the aftermarket cruise control fitted when I bought it. I gave him the ok to take it out and it ran better than new. Kept it until 2017 and then sold it and bought an Isuzu Ute which I am happy with.

I think the Toyota would still be going strong had I kept it.
