Does anyone have an overview of the basic upgrades one can perform to the 2.2L 4 cylinder ?

for example, clutch, exhaust, suspension, engine

you have just listed them...

It really depends what you want to achieve, the 5S isnt a bad motor, but its no powerhouse and without some form of forced induction its not easy to get power from.

You can do the basic Intake-Headers-Exhaust combo and free up a decent amount of power, and there are cams out there for them.

It really depends on what you want from it and your budget.

This.

There are no set upgrades or paths you can take. It always comes down to how deep are your pockets.

I too have a 2.2 Camry 2000 model I too tried to increase power with powder coated extractors, stainless steel rear sports muffler with 2 exhausts and a sports air cleaner and got very little increase so little I did not notice any difference also I lowered the car 2" with new springs and sports shockers & mags with 17" low profile tyres, it handles great but with those seats tell your passengers to hold on when you corner, lol. If you go for a different cam then you probable have to re-chip the computer and so far I haven't heard of anyone but you will when you spend a lot of $$$$$.

I suppose I should chime in...

Camshaft is near worthless for the cost, the only way to make real power/torque is with a turbo. There used to be a supercharger kit for sale however there were very few made and you will not find one in working order anymore. Either option requires a lot of money and supporting modifications.

Hi there, there must be a way of making the humble 2.2 go better, I only brought this car for work as I have a Calais 6.2l but have found this car to be fun in a way, its no speed ship but hey very good on petrol...air con cold and cooling out off this world. I like my little car, whilst I will not play with my Calais I will with this a little.

It defeats the point if I end up using more petrol so modest changes are needed, I wanted a manual but for the price ended up with and auto. As I have never owned a Toyota I need to ask...

Timing belt was changed @ 103,000 in 2005, car now has almost 260,000 on it....should I change it?

Also can I put the other dash cluster in....ie the one that has the auto in the left window?.

There is a small oil leak from somewhere yet to find it but any places I should be looking?

In all very impressed with my 1999 Carmy.

Thx Glen.

The only way you will get noticable gains in power is via forced induction as stated above. Any other methods will be wasting your money.

You should change your timing belt. The early 5S-FEs were 100,000km intervals; however, I believe that the later models moved to 150,000km intervals.

As for the leak, valve cover and distributor blanking plugs(early models had distributor) are common place to leak.

Yes it was sump gasket leaking and has been changed next is the timing belt but the local garage can do that, can someone explain to me what O/D is and should I have it on or off?, my Calais and my Toyota are both auto and both my first autos, my Calais has 6 speed auto that is semi auto and has on O/D but the Camry has it and don't know what to do with it?.

Thx Glen.

Only time you turn overdrive off is if you're towing and you don't want the car to shift into 4th as it'll bog down. Most decent autos will also prevent O/D from engaging when the car is cold, but for the most part just leave it on and let the computer sort out the rest
