2008 Aurion grinding noise on turn ?CV joint

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

My 2008 Aurion has done 67000km and has had an oil leak from the timing cover seal for the last few months. This is only a slow drip, so I haven't had it fixed yet.

Today at the shops I was reversing to park when I heard a grinding/ticking noise on extreme wheel turn. I'm thinking this is CV joint, but could it be wheel bearing?

Could the oil dripping onto the CV joint screw it up?

Cheers!

Wheel bearing would probably be in all rotation of the wheel not just turn (in my past experience. I'd be all most certain it's a CV although I haven't seen anyone post about replacing one yet. :)

So I had a mechanic look at it for whom the noise conveniently disappeared.... Nothing wrong with the CV joint but he recommends me fixing the oil leak. It will be a big job which Toyota quoted $2.5k for....

Damn!

Do you guys recommend Toyota doing it, or will it be ok going to a private mechanic? Also, a mechanic mate mentioned it might be worth putting in a new water pump and timing chain whilst the engine is out... but another guy said not to bother since the car only has 67k clicks... What are your thoughts?

it should be ok going to a private mechanic, that is if they are capable of doing jobs like that. I would reccomend doing a water pump but not a timing chain as they should never need replacing.

You know if it involves just a drip! why not track the leak down with a mirror or scope! clean the area off with solvent then smear RTV or some other sealant on the leak and you should be done.

Save the money for the next car.

I took it to some mechanic who reckon's the leak is coming from power steering hose/pump. He degreased everything, reclamped the hose and flushed the PS fluid... All for a mighty $190. He wants to see the car again in case it's leaky in which case the pump or hose may need to be replaced.

What's this RTV sealant? I might smear some on the connection of the hose to fitting, because it's still leaking.
