1984 Hilux Regulator/Alternator/Battery Questions

Ok, so as you may see on my previous topic, I am currently working through some charging issues on my Hilux. I decided to start a separate thread to ask a couple of specific questions to help me diagnose and fix the issues I'm having.

1. The regulator has 6 wires going to it. Does anyone know what specifically each wire does, or know where I can get this information?

2. Is it worth upgrading to a later model Bosch internally regulated alternator while I'm at it? Pros/cons?

3. Does anyone have any recommendations on good value-for money 4WD batteries? (I live in NSW).

4. Is it worth installing a "cut out switch" in the alternator exciter circuit while I'm messing around with this stuff to try and prevent alternator damage when doing deep water crossings? Will this be effective?

Thanks in advance.

u can prob get a maintenance CD from ebay, or even download the files.

alternators are physically different, and internally or externally regulated. Iif it fits, and it has the output, use it. adjust pulley to suit. They ARE hard to undo-dismantle. NB spacing collar will helpe fit. converting internal/external regulators isn't difficult. th yours is old and needs adjusting or replacing-depending. You can open the case and inspect all the contacts for clean and wear. Do not file contacts, or use abrasives on them. lint grease free wipe is ok. They're platinium, so they're ok or u toss it. Adjustment is for experts. Can be expensive as takes skill and time. reseal if ur going to re-use it. brushes/bearings in Alt prob dead/dying-replace them or it. ditto starter motor. Only cheap batts are NOS-wrong time of year, but you might get one at a distributor. Best batts are maintenance type-so you CAN pour in CADMIUM SULPHITE [supercheap] to extend low useage lifetimes. You;d have to break the seal of a maintenance free, and remove some acid first-then reseal. Gell batts are rubbish, LiFePO4 are $$$$ but V good.
