Knocking noise when driving straight

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I own a 2012 Toyota Camry. Since past few days I can hear knocking noise when driving straight and sometimes when accelerating in right turn. I took it to a mechanic who figured drive shaft of the passenger side needs to be replaced. So he did that but the noise is still there, especially when driving straight. It seems to be coming from the driver's side tire. I asked the mechanic if he checked driver's side and everything else and he assured me everything else looks good.

Today I managed to take a photo of the driver's side shaft. Can anyone have a look? Now I'm not an expert but something at the bottom looks like worn out. I'm not exactly sure what it is. Any clues?

Thanks! IMG_0040.thumb.jpg.5e10b0f4961313a9516aeb66b057cacf.jpg

Hope he didn't charge you for the drive shaft job :/ I would look @ suspension & ball joints first. It's only 5years old - how many kms?

That ball joint on the lower control arm also looks suspect. Maybe needs more attention than a wipe down.

Well he did say he has checked everything, that grease on the lower ball joint, is that normal?

It has got approx 100K kms, maybe get some other mechanic to have a look at it?

Just concerned about that grease on the lower ball joint, not sure if it's always like this or it's wearing off?

Lower ball joint should be dry/dusty on the outside.

Grease is inside the rubber boot to lubricate the actual ball joint. If the boot is damaged then it is going to leak some grease and dirt gets in to ruin the joint.

Thanks, I have a feeling it's the ball joint.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I'll arrange someone to have a closer look.
