Title: TOYOTA FIRST TO EXPORT 100,000 CARS
Date: Fri, Dec 19th, 2008 17:17:08 pm
Toyota Australia is set to become the first Australian carmaker to export 100,000 vehicles in a calendar year.
The milestone car is due to be shipped from Melbourne on Christmas Eve, bound for the Middle East.
It will be among more than 2,100 Australian-built Toyota cars leaving Australia that day aboard the Positive Leader.
Toyota's Australian manufacturing plant produces four-cylinder Camry and V6 Aurion sedans for both the domestic and export markets.
Approximately two out of every three vehicles produced at the Altona plant in Melbourne's west are destined for export markets.
Toyota's export total in 2008 is expected to be an industry record of 101,563 cars compared with the previous record of 97,688 in 2007.
Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said Australian-produced Camry and Aurion were in high demand overseas as well as locally.
"Camry and Aurion cars are built by more than 3,000 Toyota employees at Altona and exported to more than 20 countries," Mr Buttner said.
"This is Australia's biggest automotive export program, generating $1.8 billion a year in export revenue," he said.
"Exports are a vital part of Toyota's well-balanced business model.
"We also produce more than 40,000 cars for the local market in addition to 100,000 four-cylinder engines for our domestic and export Camry sedans."
Toyota is Australia's largest car manufacturer and market leader.
Earlier this year, the company celebrated the production milestone of 2.5 million vehicles.
Camry has been made in Australia for more than 21 years with total production exceeding 1.3 million.
V6 Aurion entered production in 2006.
