High Rev Shifting

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've had my Runx for just about 3 months and I can remember atleast 3 times when the "lift" did'nt engage in 1st gear. The rev limiter just kicked in at 5900 rpm, then 2nd gear worked fine. Whenever it happened, I pull over and try again and it never repeats itself. Another problem is that on about 3 occasions my car engine raced during shifting from 2nd to 3rd as if I did'nt realease the gas. Its an awesome but wierd feeling. I get thrown back in my seat and the tyres chirp. The problem is that whenever it happens, I have no control over it, so if I'm behind someone I may crash. Thankfully it only happened on the clear open road. Anybody else experiencing this?

You might have a throttle sticking issue, better get it checked because it is really dangerous especially when you need to brake negotiating corners.

A different issue but something i hate Toyota for, my family has a 98' Camry and it had a very wierd engine problem which has since disappeared. When your foot is off or on throttle eg on highway or braking, the engine will all of a sudden rev up and down by itself for between 5 seconds to 15 seconds and the automatic transmission will be in neutral. Its like the car is possessed  ! When i try to accelerate i can't and have to wait for the "demon" inside the camry to leave before i can carry on driving. Brought the car to Toyota numerous times and cannot find the fault, but it has 150,000kms now and it has been a awhile since something wierd happened from what i hear or maybe my family has just gotten used to it. I have also brought the car somewhere else for service. I suspect an apprentice mechanic stuffed someting up when servicing the camry.

Thanks for the advice, the problem is that we dont have mechanics here experienced with the 2ZZ_GE engine and drivetrain. I've asked around and no one has a clue. I dont want my car to be the lab rat.

My car is silver  and i have the same issue with the gearbox and the reluctant shift action from 1st > 2nd. Under 6000rpm it's fine, anything over that it wont go in without decreasing revolutions and sometimes double clutching. Silva you have an excellent point about going to a gearbox specialist to get a diagnosis of what is happening. Lets take this all the way guys to Toyota. I read somewhere that Toyota's cash reserves are 3 trillion dollars, go figure.

hi hicam,

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about your problems as we are all having our niggly issues and trying to get them resolved by Toyota.

On a funnier note. You just ruined the reputation of Silver Sportivo's by having an issue with your. So :P :P :P :P :P :P :P to all you silver boys :P :P :lol:

Cheers

Bill

Hi all,

From what i hear the engine on the Corolla Sportivo is exactly the same as the Celica.

Has anyone in this forum who owns a Celica had any problems like this?

Seems pretty strange Corolla's seem to have this problem and yet Celica's have not reported any similar problem from what i have seen.

Maybe just maybe it could be an issue with the car's computer on the corolla's as they are re-mapped for the Stivo.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for the welcome Xoom. Sorry i'm being honest about the colour...Look i don't want to complain anymore but i think we all have a very valid fault that needs retification. I really feel for all the owners that have this prob. It's highly embarassing when dragging someone off the lights and the dam thing wont go into gear

Anyway i love my sportivo and we were once nearly departed but we have since reunited..aaahh

I was reading an article in a motor magazine about the Lotus that uses the 2ZZ-GE and 6speed. The lotus uses all things except they redesigned the shift mechanism. they didn't say why it's obvious to us guys.

I dont have as much of a problem with shifting now, but it crunches real bad from 1st to 2nd if i change hard!

Could be a synchro issue. I think the 6 speed has been underdeveloped and the double synchros are sh*t. The Type-R has tripple synchros and the S2000 has carbon mix synchros i think. But even these cars have some shifting issues. S2000's have gear crunching issues too but their shifters are so sweet.

I think they might have also altered the ratios and had to make the shifter itself longer for better reach. Someone also did mention they have higher rev cut in 1st 8600rpm and 2nd than our cars making it so easy to land LIFT.

but dont forget its is only a few of us which have this problem..... so why do the other guys not have a problem? if its a bad design, well why do theirs work fine?

I guess there were a few bad eggs.

From the latest poll it looks like there are more than a few of us here with gearbox issues. What issues though? The poll is too general. Some of us have gear crunching but no gear shifter "sticking" at high revs. I have both :(
