I take it you have the stock Fujitsu TEN head unit?

The same thing happened to mine - the screen light simply turned off one night. I believe they are sealed units and from experience, Toyota prefer not to play around with them. Perhaps try JB-HiFi or Stratfield?

Hi guys, I own a 98 Grande with the exact same problem, bought the car like that, the stereo head unit light is the only light not working (green light), took the car to local Toyota dealer and they fobbed me off to a radio place and then they fobbed me off saying its not worth it as its got to come out then they had to send it away, its annoying as its the only defect in my car at all. Im sure its a 10 cent bulb. The sound from my system is awesome so i wish to keep it, not sure what you think of yours, plus it keeps it original, let me know if you guys fix yours and how, thanks.

yup, the grande's sound system is pretty fantastic. most people think i have some really goood 6x9 in the rear, and even a sub. i infact have the bass set to zero, adnit stilll pumps that much bass .

I'm pretty sure I've seen a thread around somewhere on how to change the colour of the screen (prob' TN).

From what I read it seems like a lot of hassle for a stock unit.

Your best of just getting an aftermarket CD player.

Believe me even a base model head deck of any good brand will outperform pretty much any oem deck in any car, and if you shop around it'll only cost like $100 bucks give or take.

Yes its too much trouble, Ill just be sticking with my original, I like things to look the way they were intended and the head unit in the grande looks good, for mine its only the actual readout part of the deck which isnt lit, the rest of the head unit, including all buttons are well lit, its just an annoyance not being able to read at night, I have had aftermarket CD players etc in other cars (good brands) and I would say the sound from the Grande's is still better and its better (indeed a better overall car) than my 02 VX Calais's system (with 8 speakers), I can have it very loud without any distortion (and car door internals dont vibrate and rattle like Calais). I believe the rear 6X9's are superb, front door speakers give great mid-range and sail mounted tweeters just top it off, I get the best sound from playing CD's, (in dash or rear changer) or I might just be lucky and my speakers are all well preserved as car was always garaged.

same as mine, and also, the grnade's head unit, isnt the normal size of ur normal cd head units, its like double as big. and same iwth me, its just the main read out of the tracks, that isnt lightingi up, all other lgihts are perfect. i would really like to find that thread on how to get it fixed, as even though tis a minoor issue, at night time is when im driving the car most. could anyone pelase help find that thread?

Hi,

I have just repaired my Stereo LCD backlight. It is a tiny light globe called a T1. They look like a small LED 1.3mm diameter but are really a globe. You need to desolder the metal cover over the LCD display & remove it to reveal the globe. I had to buy 10 x T1 12 Volt lamps to get one. Cost me $11.00 from RS Components in Sydney. The globe has a green plastic cover over it & is mounted in a sort of surface mount base. The lamp has about 8 volts across it. The new lamp was not quite as bright as the original but it's close enough for me.

I also hooked up the mute wire from my Nokia car kit to pin 4 (orange wire) & got the stereo muting from the car kit while I was at it.

There is a device on Ebay for those interested that allows you to plug an Ipod / Iphone into the 6 stacker input.
