G'day,

Just in the past few days the front driver's side wheel/area has started making some rattley noises, which I believe is the CV joint...

What should a competent mechanic charge me to fix it...?

It's going to take roughly an hour to fit a new CV joint ($50-$75 labour) + whatever amount the joint costs.

I'm pretty sure I sourced CV joints for the gen4 for about $110 but that was ages ago and I can't remember where they were from.

Be a safe bet to put away around $200-$250 for the job.

Oh and to check if your CV is rooted, find a parking lot/open space and do a few figure 8's, If you hear clicking coming from the front of the car it's the CV.

It depends upon the type of sounds. If its a squeaking/whining sound, possibly the wheel hub which would cost about $400 to replace. If its a clicking sound, possibly the CV joints which would cost about $250 to replace. If its creaking or rattling, possibly the steering and suspension. Best bet would be to take it a decent mechanic and have it checked out. Could even just need a grease up which would be about $60

is cv joint replacement a tough job? could it be a diy kinda job?

you can replace a cv joint at home, but i'd only recommend it if you're confident and know what youre doing. it's not overly difficult, but VERY fiddly.

but youll need a few special tools to install the boot clamps, etc. as well as lots of grease

Once a drive shaft gets noisy it needs to be reco'd, not just fitting a new boot and grease...

Call around your local reco guys and see what prices they'll do you for cash...

Should all come with a year warranty...
