I Broke Something

Hi Guys,

Last nite i was adjusting the timing on my celica and i slipped and broke some sensor.

It is located on the water inlet piece on the side of the engine, just infront of the bolt that holds the dizzy.

It is a little green sensor with two wires going in to it. I am not sure what it is or does, but the car now has trouble starting and the check engine light stays on.

Once the car is running though, it runs and idles fine.

Any ideas?

What you have broken is the Water Temp Sensor. You can get a replacement one from Bursons for about $3-$5.

Check your diagnostic codes first. To do so locate the diagnostic port and bridge terminals TE-1 and E1 with a peice of wire as shown.

DSC04169.jpg

Turn the key to IGN but dont start it and your CHECK ENGINE LIGHT should be flashing. To get the codes you need to count the flashes.

It will flash in a series eg for a diagnostic code of 42 it will flash like this:

---- = pause

*** = flash

(Turn key to IGN) ---*---*---*---*-------------------------*---*--- then will start again and continue untill you reset the ECU.

Once you find what the problem code is, which Im sure will be 22, lettuce know otherwise.

Code 22 means Short or Open circuit in Water Temp Sensor which basically means you'll need a new sensor.

After you have rectified the problem you have to cancel out the code of your diagnostics. To 'cancel' the code out of the ECU's memory simply remove the EFI fuse from the fuse box (located in engine bay) for 20 seconds and all should be better.

Goodluck

I did the ECU code thing.

I got the following. *___*_*___*_*___*_*

Looked it up in the workshop manual and couldn't find it, or find what the part is.

Strange thing is, besides the car not starting properly when cold and the light being on, it runs perfectly, all the instruments work, etc.

It still starts perfectly when hot, just is a ***** when its cold.

below is a pic of the broken sensor

Hrmmz yeah thats definantley the Water Temp sensor.... head down to Bursons and get a replacement sender. They are a pr*ck of a thing to get off so take your time with it and use alot of WD-40 or the like.

About the code your getting could you space it out coz its sorta hard to interpret.

If its consistant like this ---*---*---*---*---*---*---*---*--- etc then thats fine and theres nothing recorded in the ECU.

If its like this ---*---*------*---*------------------*---*------*---*---- which is what I think you put up then yeah thats a code 22.

it definitely goes like this

one blink *pause* two blinks *pause* two blinks *pause* two blinks

*_____*_*_____*_*_____*_*

I would think by replacing the sender then everything should be okay...

Lettuce know how you go.

BURSONS aaarrrgggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh. They sell the same one for about $5

Just ask them for the Wate Temp sensor for the 5S-FE/3S-GE ,or which ever engine you have, then they should have them in stock.

But if you want to spend more then you have to go ahead... :(

I picked two sensors up from the wreckers, as repco/autobarn/supercheap didn't have any in stock.

One off a 4S-FE (corona) and one off a 5S-FE (camry)

Put the one from the corona in, reset the ECU and it all works perfectly now.
