As much as i like the Hilux TD the Mazda BT50 TD is a damm good performer and goes really well. Plus i think it is cheaper than hilux as well. BT50 won an award not long ago for best ute/4WD or something along those lines.

Best bet is to take both for a drive and see which one you like for comfort/performance and practicality forgetting the bias towards one brand or the other.

BT50/Ford Rangers are GREAT value for money, after a tune/piggyback fuel economy goes up dramatically as does power/torque. IMO, new Hilux's are leaning more towards show than go, which is very disappointing as the older ones are still very reliable/practical.

The Ranger is a good machine, I have put a lot of Kms on them, fuel economy is good and they are great to drive. Don't mention the power, no need to, abundant supply from the 3.0 diesel.

In terms I diesels I would probably take the Ranger over a Lux, but when you want a Petrol option the V6 Lux is killer :)

I regulary drive the father in laws diesel 5 sp hilux (about 5 mnths old) and do not have an issue with it at all. He is running everything you expect for a farm/bush type vehicle (inc. tyres, susp mods etc.) and the ride is still very comfy. I believe he is still getting around 12km/L on the road. Does seem a little easier to slide on the corners compared to my 97 model but reckon thats cause the motor is so quiet (even at 170KM/Hr) and you gotta watch the speedo pretty intensly. My only advice is make sure it does have cruise because you will need it ! ! ! ! !
