Steering wheel audio controls

Aurion_Camry_SWI.pdfI have seen that there have been discussions regarding the problems associated with fitting aftermarket head units to Aurions, and I will assume the same goes for Camrys. I have attached my explanation of what I have seen by looking at the drawings 07EWD.pdf and Audio_Visual.pdf, posted elsewhere on this site. I have also included a drawing showing how to connect a steering wheel interface.

This can only be checked by someone with a Camry or Aurion. I would be interested to hear the results.

Thanks mate for taking the time to analyse that. I guess this is what sets the engineers apart from the technicians. The concern was purely for the DISP button since some may want to put another unit in and not worry about the audio controls, but would like to have the DISP button working at least. I went downstairs just then to test the scenario you have explained in your write-up and have found that with the steering wheel harness unplugged from the back of the head unit WITH the A/C controls harness plugged in properly, the DISP button still does not work.

I have played around with it before, but not overly extensive, and without following the physical cables themselves, I can't figure is out. I don't really trust the wiring diagrams as I like to see where it goes physically:

I've always had the assumption that a SWI-JACK will make the audio controls usable again, but there is no way to tell whether it will restore the DISP button without trying it.

I was tempted to ground pin number 6 as well.... but it's a 50/50 shot at screwing something up.

Okay, here is a solution to those that wish to use an aftermarket head unit on their Aurion buy don't want to buy an control box to get their audio controls working but still want to retain DISP button functionality.

You just need to ground the pink wire on the steering wheel control harness.

Thanks Mikeyboy for taking the time to help out. I just wasn't willing to ground anything on that harness without knowing how it integrates at the other side. It's just because the DISP button was tied into it that I thought something isn't quite normal.

On the Kluger, if you have A/C controls on the steering wheel, the ground comes from the A/C controls. If you don't have A/C controls on the steering wheel, the ground comes from the audio controls. It is most likey the same on the Aurion, but I didn't see that in the drawings. The DISP button wasn't even shown when there are no A/C controls; the US version may not have the display unit without climate control.

If you disconnect F8 from your head unit and connect pin 6 to ground, there is no danger of damaging anything. If you check that there is no voltage on the pin first, you can feel reassured that nothing will happen. The only pin to watch out for is pin 3, the speed signal.

The main reason why I didn't want to risk it. The thought of killing my Optitron meter is enough to stop me.

Thanks though. I have an aftermarket unit that accepts the controls, so I wasn't so willing to be the guinea pig.

If some one with A/C controls on their steering wheel can check the functionality with F8 disconnected and with F16 disconnected, I can update the explanation.

I have an australian 04 camry altise limited and have just today tried to connect up a PAC SWI-PS but am not having much luck. I have connected it exactly as shown in the diagram and it works fine when the car is on accessory however as soon as its turned on it no longer works. The only button that seems to register is the seek up and the rest don't work. Even more peculiar is that the mode button turns my headlights on.... ??. I have wired is exactly as shown and have not ****** it up. When pin 6 is grounded even without the PAC unit connected the mode button will turn my headlights on.. only if the car is on though... what is going on?

Yeah this worked !!!! lol i pull my head unit out last night then cut off the pink wire then i hooked up to the back of the head unit metal part it works now im happy ^_^
