After reading the post regarding Unichip vs Powerchip, I went to the Unichip site to see what was available for the 1ZZFE in the standard Rollas. I saw something there for a 2001 Corolla, but they didn't specify which model (the ZZE models hit the showrooms very late 01).

Anyway, I noticed the MR2 Spyder had an engine designation of 1ZZGE ... I was always under the impression that the Spyder motor was the same as the Rolla, just behind the seats and with a different exhaust making the extra kW.

Can anyone tell me if that's the only difference between a 1ZZFE and a 1ZZGE, or is there something more to it?

MRS also has a different gearbox (5sp or 6sp) the 5sp i'm pretty sure has shorter ratios on 2nd or 3rd (or all)

afaik, mr-s never had the 2zz, although the engine swaps are starting to become a popular thing in japan.

mr-s has 6 spd sequential manual and 6spd manual. before 2002 it had the 5sp sequential manual.

1st gear and 6th gear ratio is the same ratio as the celica box, the ratios in between are longer, as well as final drive which is also slightly longer.

helical LSD is optional in japan

The letters in the engine code of toyota's is to so with head design. The GE engine codes have the head designes at 65 degrees (I THINK) so they are wider than the others, so when you compare the 1zzfe with the 2zzge you can see the width of the 2zzge being wider from the angle design. the same applies with the 4age and the 4afe, the head of the 4age is wider. The reason for the angle is to allow the heads to breathe better and thus rev harder (I THINK). I read up on it ages ago, cant remember all the details. :P :P

I do remember back in the early 90's when all Corolla's became Twin Cam, that the hi-po engines (i.e. SX and GTi) were often referred to as having a wider angle between the valves than the lesser engines, so your explanation makes perfect sense.

Toyota engine codes are split into two sections, the bit before the dash, and the bit after it (eg: 2JZ-GTE).

Before the dash.

The letters signify the "family" or "series" of the engine. The numbers signify a revision of the bottom end (ie: bore, stoke, block). Higher numbers don't necessarily mean a larger block.

For example, the twin turbo engines in modern Supras are the 1JZ-GTE and 2JZ-GTE. The 1JZ is a 2.5L engine, while the 2JZ is a 3.0L. Both are twin turbo inline sixes.

After the dash.

The letters after the dash specify the features of the engine.

G - Wide angle Twin Cam (sportier head)

F - Narrow angle Twin Cam (economical head)

T - Turbocharged

Z - Supercharged

E - Electronic Fuel Injection

U - Emissions control (Japanese)

C - Emissions control (Californian).

7A-FE: 1.8L DOHC EFI 16V inline four cylinder

1G-GTE: 2.0L DOHC EFI 24V intercooled twin turbo inline six cylinder

3/4K-C: 1.3L OHV Carby 8V inline four cylinder (4K block, 3K head)

5M-E: 2.8L SOHC EFI 12V inline six cylinder

7M-GTE: 3.0L DOHC EFI 24V turbocharged inline six cylinder

18R-C: 2.0L SOHC Carby 8V inline four cylinder

18R-GEU: 2.0L DOHC EFI 8V inline four cylinder

3S-GE / 3S-FE: 2.0L DOHC EFI 16V inline four cylinder

3S-GTE: 2.0L DOHC EFI 16V turbocharged inline four cylinder

2T-G: 1.6L DOHC 8V inline four cylinder
