I have a little trouble here with my new Toyota Corolla Ascent 1ZZ-FE. I beleive I have.

Briefly...

My car, I think, doesn't run on correct RPMs (normal road condition).

I have to change the gear from

1 to 2 at speed less 20km and RPM - 2800

2 to 3 at speed about 40km and RPM -3000

3 to 4 at speed 60km

4 to 5 at speed 70-80km

When I run on 5th gear at about 80-90km the RPM shows 3000 and more. I've never experienced this on any other manual (same class) cars.

I did my own research and inquired toyota. the least was useless.

The formulas I have helped me to calculate the average theoretical figures based on toyota published for this car gear ratios.

as per calculation the RPMs and speed must be different to what I have in reality.

for example: 5th gear must be running in between 2300-2400 RPM

The engine is always running like over accelerated!

Toyota checked it and have noticed nothing.

Could anyone advise me on the above. Where to look to?

Cheers

Vic

The gearing in our cars is very close ratio, looks like your shifting like early, in normal evey day driving i normal shift at about 5000rpm that gets you to 60 Kmh in 2 easy.

Here is a good read about the gearing in the coralla and a good review of the car too:

at 5000 isn't that a bit much for everyday driving? i shift at 3000, approx every 20km/h... but maybe thats just me

i think izzfe will be able to help you on this. where are you tonight?

the numbers you have do look strange. the auto 1zzfe i have does 1-2 at 60 km.

The RPMs you've stated are correct. I usually shift at 3,000RPM for normal driving, which roughly equals 20, 40, 60 and 80 km/h.... as 02rolla said, the gearing in our cars are very short....

At 100km/h, I'm sitting at around 3,100RPM.... in comparison, when I drive the S15, it sits a few hundred RPM under 3,000 in 6th... it really feels like the 1zz-fe corollas need a 6th gear... you don't know how many times I've shifted out of 5th looking for 6th when I'm on the freeway...

You should read you manual... it's in there.

Yeah i drive pretty spirited :) i just like to use the torque thats developed just over 4000 rpm before i change gears.

when i got back from driving my Audi for a couple of months, i was looking for a 7th gear...

120km/h sits at around 4000rpm for us. i think 100 is around 3500 or so.

Thanks all of you fellows!

I still feel that when it was brand new i had a different gearing pattern. I'm determine to do drive test on the same car and hopefully compare the differences.

Here I am! :)

Yeah, our cars are geared short

3,000 rpm for cruising in 5th at 100km/h is the norm for a manual 1zz-fe. You'll find the car goes nicely in everyday driving if you shift up at around 3,000 - 3,500rpm.

Kcorro and I did a quick test a while ago, You can get to about 55km/h in first and about 90km/h in second :P

Also for downshifts in everyday driving, the sweetest speeds are:

90km/h 5th - 4th

70km/h 4th - 3rd

50km/h 3rd - 2nd

Remember to bleep the throttle for smoothness :)

Mine is manual, 1zz-fe, i agree with IZZ-FE that if you rev up to about 3000~3500 it is comfy for everyday driving.

i rev up to about 4000 everyday driving, and you can really push it if you bring it up to red.

my ratios would be the same as yous, hence, here are the speeds i travel before the rev limiter kicks in... (approx 6000rpm)

1st - just under 60km/hr

2nd - 90km/hr

3rd - 130km/hr

4th - about 170 (if i remember correctly) its been a while...

5th... never tried... :P

so hope this helps!
