Hi

I own a 1988 VZV21 2.5litre Toyota Camry with 128XXXkms and i have a few problems. Any help with this would be appreciated.

Problems:

1. The temp gauge works correct sometimes otherwise it just goes straight to hot. I can tap the gauge it returns back to the correct position. Is the temp gauge faulty or the sender unit?

The temp sensor as the HAYNES repair manual said it should be located under the bypass housing above the exhaust crossover pipe - no deal!! Any idea's where the temp sender unit is?

2. The engine stumbles under acceleration sometimes what would cause this?

3. When setting off from a set of lights the car sometimes surges, stumbles then sometimes backfires in the exhaust (not out the exhaust) what causes this?

What I have done/replaced/checked so far to resolve this

Spark Plugs

Rotor

Dizzy cap

Leads

Air filter

Fuel filter

ISC (idle speed control) calibrated

TPS (throttle position sensor) working correctly

AFM (air flow meter) working correctly

Ignition timing 15 degrees BTDC @ 800-900rpm with terminals T and E1 disconnected (Does the car need to be in neutral or park- was done in park)

Compression test prefect

1 180psi

2 180psi

3 182psi

4 180psi

5 180psi

6 181psi

Tonight I am cleaning the throttle body as I was told this could be the problem or it could be the EGR vacuum modulator.

Thanks for any insight
