I tried to put my Focals into my Paseo. The speakers were 6.5 inchs . At the end i just left them in the garage and got myself a set of 4inch cheaper splits.I dont think there is a easier way of doing it unless as you said "doing any thing drastic" If you want to keep your stock door trims then options are limited.

if you do work with fibre glass, i did pods, werent that great cause i just wanted to house the speakers only but it does the job (didnt round the edges off to look neat). i kinda regret not having covers for em cause they stick out and the left one has gone cause people kick it, 500$ down the drain there. Another option is kick panel pods they sell em for most cars and make sure you have covers for them.
