serpentine belt automatic tensioner on 2003 sportivo

Hi, just trying to understand how to take the tension off the auto tensioner so I can replace the serpentine belt. The auto tensioner assembly has a 19 mm nut that a special service tool can be attached too and I have been told to apply clockwise/downward pressure to it, in more than 3 seconds then remove the mounting or pivoting bolt. Whats the 3 second bit about ?( maybe takes a while for the piston that keeps the tension on, to be forced back to allow tension to come off?) and if I can get the tension off, surely just slipping the belt off without undoing a mounting bolt would be ok, and then with no belt on the pulleys, the tensioner would be ok to leave fully extended to the limit of its range until its time to put the new belt back on. Hope someone has done this and can help with my understanding.
