The service books for the 50-series is 15,000 intervals - surely if Sludge is an issue, Toyota would recommend servicing every 10,000kms?

Knowing the 2GR-FE engine quite well, I definitely would not leave it that long.

I'm with this, but I do mine every 10K or 6 months, I think 15k in 9 months of city driving in particular is too long for this engine.

Manufactures have a great financial motivation to extend service intervals to the max since capped price servicing has come along.

Our 10/2012 Prodigy was purchased with 45,000 kays on the odo approximately 3 years ago.

Its now a tad under 69,000 kays.

Daily driver.

I do all the services myself .

OIl is done 10k and under using fully synthetic oil and a new filter each time.

I also use the Genuine Toyota filter as I can get these heaps cheaper online than those  over priced Ryco ones at the locals.... and the Ryco don't give give you a replacement sump bolt gasket.

I am planning to do the coolant and brake fluid flush soon.

Cheers 👍

The sludge and vvt rattle do seem to be fixed or at least significantly improved by using good oil and shorter change intervals. My 2007 had 193000 when I bought it, and the vvt loud rattle on start up. Now at 226000 the rattle never happens after 30000km of 8000km oil changes
