Custom Y-Pipe >> Result... Better than 150hp!!

Taking your car to an exhaust shop with an idea doesn't necessarily get you a good result.

Putting a different air filter on doesn't mean you get more air in.

The car has many sensors installed in the intake, exhaust and too many other places to mention. All of these go back to one of many car management systems, and despite any attempt to fool them, it will make every possible attempt to return the car into its operating window. If it cant then either an error will be generated or fuel consumption and/or power available will be affected.

Designers spend a lot of time working things out using the old fashion way employing theory and boring mathematics. This is a tried and proven method excepted by everyone. Many cars that the average person will buy cost millions to design.

Ask your exhaust guy if the design looks nice or has some real idea of how the flow will be influenced and pressures involved. I am old enough to remember that typical standard factory V8 exhausts in the 70's were only a single 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" pipes on 350/351. (from header to exhaust tip).

The downside of not using theory and maths is the cost and time involved, don't be put off by this but do go to a lot of specialists and get their advice even use their ideas against other specialist. You will soon work out who really does know what they are talking about.

Just my thoughts anyway.

But i feel as if the car has more torque, i was in 2nd gear the whole time, so yah.

The car doesnt feel slower, it has more torque especially in 2nd gear. i can definetely feel it, and it feels alittle quicker as well.

Naturally, 2nd gear will feel like it has a bit of torque due to it's gear ratio. Sitting on 3500RPM in 2nd, then mashing the accelerator will make the car feel like it has quite a bit of pull. This is just due to the gearing ratios.

Crap i dont know how to upload youtube videos!!!

For future reference, all members can do this... not gold members only:

As of the 15th of October we have enabled a way for Gold Members to add their favourite videos on TOC for all to see and share all whithin the TOC forums.

All videos must be from Youtube.com for this to work.

How to add a YOUTUBE video

1. Goto YouTube.com and select a favourite video. At the end of the web address you will see a 10 digit piece of code (usally after the = sign) copy this

2. Then with this 10 digit code add it within the two BB codes.. here is a sample below.

[youtube]

You must add it between the two youtube codes for it to embed.

3. Before posting Please click PREVIEW to see if your video worked.

All videos can also be rated. Rate the video you think is the best!

Rules: posting p*rn or anything that is classed as not family friendly will result in your account being closed indefinatly. Please do not ruin this feature for other members. If this gets abused then we will have to remove it from the boards altogether.

just for clarification purposes... you're talking about the REAR y pipe, right?

cause there is a front y pipe too...

the mods we have done are only the front Y pipe, theres no need to do anything with the rear one.

sorry, my question was aimed at the original poster...

cause some people are talking about the front y-pipe, but if i understand correctly, the original poster has modified the rear y-pipe...

The OP, ZRSHIFT, has only modified his front y-pipe and put a new cat on. The the dynoed it and got a crap figure. The exhaust guy then said that the rear y-pipe and 1.5 inch pipe after that is a cause for restriction, so now he is all concerned about that.

I like the video, especially the 1st wave sounds really sexyyy :D

Free-revving an engine doesn't sound as good as revving it under load. Some cases though can be the opposite.

Well now that im more clear on what is going on, the front y pipe was done, but the rear y pipe is still stock at 1.5inch just like everybody elses.

So the dyno must have been dodgy to score me a 152.7hp reading. Other than that maybe he screwed up the front y pipe??

After he was finished and as i drove it, i felt that in 2nd gear the car had more torque then it did before the y pipe was done. That's what i was trying to say before.

But then again i hav the car booked in for monday to get the rear y pipe completed (2.5inch) and then dyno it again, hopefully to get a better score.

Plus i will be bring Mkay's photos from his thread to show him and compare if it is the same as mine.

Then on wednesday im hopefully bringing the car down to the drags and cross my fingers i can get traction on the tyres to get a good time.

ZRSHIFT you do realise that you are chasing a theoretical HP that you think you should have! The dyno that you went to may not be accurate/calibrated/operated the same and trying to compare it to what someone elses result on a different dyno usually wont work. Yes I know it was a long way out. Was it a Dyno Dynamics dyno done in shootout mode?

When doing performance mods like this it is best to have a before dyno to give you something to compare to what you achieve after the mod using the same dyno.

Also I dont think that 2.5 inch pipe work will give you the end result you are after. My reasoning for this is that even with a 3 inch main pipe you would only need 2.25 inch pipe work to the rear muffers and the Aurions main pipe is only about 2.5 inch so the standard 1.5 inch pipes are ok.

i agree... dynos should only be a tool to measure before and after mods.

dyno days can be a good way to compare but there is still other factors that affect the result that are not controllable.

I really have no idea why my result was so off. It is that dyno u mentioned and in shootout mode, Mkay had his there and got 212hp but his whole exhaust was done with his typhoon kit.

Man my car sounds wierd aye. It sounds bubbly, does that usually mean anything? Ill ask the guy on Monday, i would really hate it that he did a different design to mkay's and it stuffed something up.

Before you go and spend more money on changing the exhaust take some pics and post them for comment and maybe get a run on a different dyno to give you a comparison or go to a drag strip and have a run to test it out. Other wise you could be spending money that you dont need to.

Dyno Dynamics dynos have what is a Shootout mode which makes it possible to compare with other Dyno Dynamics dynos, but this will give a very different result if used in a tuning mode.

I actually wanna go back to that place. The exhaust note when im driving, sounds real bubbly and sounds really annoying like putting a muffler on a Honda Civic, if u know wat i mean.

Sounds loud, but wen u drive its plain annoying and sounds like crap. Does that mean anything? Or just the y pipe done gave it a crap noise.

Ill take pics on Monday hopefully everything turns out okay.

Did some measuring of the exhaust pipe this morning. Please take note that this in on a TRD so the rear section of the exhaust may be different to a N/A Aurion. The TRD's are suposed to have 15% less exhaust restriction but I expect that this will most likely be in the rear muffler design than pipe size.

All measurments are OD.

=> Front Y pipe is 50mm (1.9inch) from the bottom of the headers to the merge.

=> Main single pipe from cat to rear Y is 61mm (2.4inch).

=> And last but not least the rear Y pipe to the mufflers is 49mm (1.9inch).
