I have a ZR6 with the silver interior highlights and center console etc, however the previous owner wasn't quite so careful with things and as a result several of the silver trim panels are pretty scratched up. I've considered replacing them with new parts, but at around $200 for one of the pieces of plastic (and $1400 for another piece of plastic :o ) I'm looking into just repainting them instead.

Does anybody know of a place to source the right color trim paint?I found something fairly close at supercheap (with the semi-metallic look) but it's just a TINY bit off - enough that the perfectionist in me won't settle especially since only some surfaces are in need of touchup and others aren't.

I know I could probably take to a proper paint shop, get it matched and mixed up then apply it with a spray gun (probably best option, I have the equipment afterall) but I'd like to consider all my options first.

cheers

some places will match it and mix it up and then put it in a spray can for you...

that would be the easiest option, imo...

i cant remember for the life of me which places do it though...

i dont know why, but i'm thinking bunnings does it...

Places like Repco and Supercheap Auto will do it for you if you have the paint code.

Careful going to Supercheap,Repco ect ect...they will be mixing the paint from a system designed for exterior color codes, not trim codes.

Try your local panel/crash supply shops,i sold empty pressure packs & hand pumping machines to a lot of these places when i was a autoparts/crash supplies rep, they should be able to pump a can of what you need.

Most crash repairers or auto paint specialists should be able to mix you up a color from a sample, so if you take them in a dash peice they should be able to get something pretty close to perfect. This method is never going to be 100% accurate, but you can't expect perfection without a color code, and nobody seems to know the code for the Aurion interior (including Toyota dealerships).

Use interior vinyl... Say Carbon Vinyl ;) hehehe

That stuff is an a*sehole to work with. In my Lancer I did the whole centre console from the DIN fascia down and back to between the seats (much like the coated part of the Aurion now I think of it) in brushed aluminium finish vinyl. Biggest pr!ck of a thing to make fit the contous of the dash without puckering or folding the sheet. I wasted at least $50 of vinyl trying to get it right.

in the end I've had an automotive paint supply shop match the color using a dash piece to work off. Will be spraying it up this weekend, hoping it's a good match.

being in my car as often as I am the silver finish is starting to look second hand, especially the rear of the console where the armrest slides (Im always moving this part) those prices quoted for replacements are scary, so any fix for this is welcome.

Do you know PaintTech out Moonah/Derwent Park way? They're on Sunderland St just down the road from Pickles Auctions, on the opposite side on a corner. They are mixing me up some paint to suit. From the color swatches they had, we managed to find something almost dead on exact. I don't expect it to be a very noticable difference. If you swing into PaintTech, ask for Peter and tell him you want the same color he mixed up for Chris at Bellchambers.

thanks Chris I will check it out. I dont think it will do much for the armrest part, but it will be good for touch up for the main console.

just sprayed up the trim bit - no good, I stuffed up the gun settings and it saturated the piece. No runs, but it will still need to be sanded back once it's dry and hit again. Haven't sprayed in a long time, guess I'm outta practice.

finally got everything right. The color is a bit different from stock, more silver to it - not close enough to blend in unfortunately but since I'm repainting all my dash pieces I got away with it - the only "clash" will be where the plate above the ashtray pocket and the air con panel are because they aren't being painted, but because of the shape of the dash you can't pick it.

Hopefully I'll get some picks up tomorrow

pics as promised. The color clash is more obvious in the photos than in person, and despite my best efforts I just couldn't lay down the paint flat enough to look completely stock. It's neat, but not perfect.

Also a bit of the stereo controller I'm working my way into the dash. Still needs some work though before I finally install it.

Looks nice.

Do you have any pictures of how you taped it all up? Did you sand and prime first?

It wasn't taped up - it was fully disassembled into only the painted bits.

I did sand everything down first, but didn't prime as it was still onto a painted surface. However now I've had some time to see it in daylight, I'm still not happy with how the paint has come out. The gun is still spraying it too thick. I'll see if I can get away just flattening it with some superfine sandpaper, but chances are I'll be repainting it again this weekend

What color clash? I can't see any difference whatsoever.

Thats the paint I was telling Scoota about.

Motion seconded. Definately keen to see how you masked it all off. I may end up doing a full spray myself.

Like I mentioned above, I actually fully disassembled the dash and the storage compartments into individual pieces so I could spray them properly.

Cool, thanks. Please take a picture if you take it apart again. I'm sure there are a few people around here that are interested.

That flat panel I've circled in red... that is the bit I assumed you masked off. When its all fitted in the car it looks like that whole console section is one big piece (except for gear surround and storage compartments), with part coated in the silver. Or am I wrong, and the part I've circled is actually a seperate silver piece that can be removed?

Just remembered, the other bit I was thinking you must have masked was those little chrome bits on the compartment lids, or are they somehow removable?

yep, it can be removed as well. The gear selector bit does come semi-permanently attached to the piece from the factory - ie it requires some plastic "lugs" to be broken off to remove it, something I did when I changed the illumination color. I've since used a combination of screws and silicon to hold it together now.

It's coming apart again this weekend, and I'll be trying one last time to get it to spray properly. I think the nozzle on my gun is simply too large too spray it fine enough, but time will tell. If it doesn't work this time, I'll give the paint to a local shop and get them to apply it, shouldn't cost much just to have them apply the paint I provided.

Try googling Vinyl Doctor we use them at work, as we make custom facias out of mdf to house navigation units into cars such as porche, jag, new prados ect.

I myself will be hopefully be picking up my sportivo this weekend and has few minor marks similar to yours which i will be getting him to touch up. From what i understand there a few guy that go under the Vinyl doctor name if i remember tomorrow i will get the number for the guy we use as his colour match is spot on compared to others when he is unavailable.

Edit.

Also how a few guys are saying how you masked it up did the chrome strips come off or you masked them up?

The chrome bits pop out from behind once you remove those pieces back cover.
