Rattle around drivers footwell when stopped

Hi,

I have an annoying rattle in my Aurion that sounds like it's coming from around the driver,s foot well area or in the very lower part of the dash. It could even be just on the other side of the firewall inside the engine bay. It's very hard to pinpoint. I've had Toyota check it out a few times and they can't find anything as the rattle does seem to come and go.

It only seems to be present when I'm stopped idling. For example if I stop at the lights and apply the brake I can hear it. As I take my foot off the brake it disappears and comes back when I put my foot on the brake again. But then on occasions I've also heard it when my foot is off the brake completely and then it disappears as I touch the accelerator.

The best way I can describe it is like a heat shield type rattle but a more plastic sound rather than metal. It doesn't sound like it's coming from the engine/gearbox etc. more like something touching something it shouldn't causing a vibration. I don't think it's at all serious just more annoying. Having the AC off/on also makes no difference.

Any advice on where to look would be most welcome.

I am pretty sure you are talking about the same dull rattle that I have. I never posted it up because I thought it was just my dodgy headlight wiring job.

Hopefully we can eliminate what it is.

Take a look in the engine bay around the drivers side - and if it is anything like the sound I had, it turned out to be the edge of the aircon pipe fitting rattling against the body. As the pipe is connected to the airbox inside the car, I guess the sound was just transmitting down the pipe into the cabin?...

I can get a picture if you are having troubles finding it. In my situation, the pipe was sitting about 2mm from the frame, and when stopped at lights would rattle - probably just due to the engine vibration increase at idle. I simply used a large screwdriver and bent the support bracket very slightly outwards, so now the pipe clears by about 5mm. I haven't had a rattle since!

I've had a look around the drivers side in the engine bay but can't really see anything. Was it just behind the ABS system somewhere or did you get to it from underneath the car. Thanks

just another possibility.... the cover underneath the passenger side foot well (under the glove box) which covers the fuse box? mine came loose a while back and started to rattle on idle... i bit of stick on velcro helped to secure this cover and stop the rattle..

just remember to wipe the surface you stick the velcro with isopropyl to ensure it sticks well.

Very good point Davo... but in my case I have both the main cover and the fuse cover off because I blew a non essential fuse (My fault) but havnt replaced it yet.

I have confirmed that the part in the video is in fact causing the rattle noise.

Whilst in a Maccas car park the rattle for the first time was constant and wouldn't go away. So I confirmed it with a passenger.

While the passenger was sitting inside they identified that when I pushed down on the part that the noise stopped... There were a few times where I pretended to push on the part as to fool them but they didn't fall for it... I'm so happy to figure this one out.

Now I just need to figure out how to stop it. At the moment I am thinking of putting some heat resistant rubber under it where it rattles against the body.

      Ticking Hilux 5le

      Hi all, got a 2004 diesel 4x4 Hilux with the 5le motor in it. 250,000 kilometres, i’m the second owner and have had it about 9 months. Since I bought it there has always been a constant ticking noise while driving (anywhere over 1200rpm) but not while idling. Does it while accelerating, maintaining speed and decelerating. No real impact on power and I get about 12.5L per 100km. I never worried about it too much but it’s starting to ***** me off a bit. I’ll link a video below, any clues what could be causing the noise?

      Thanks for the post Aldo. Googling echo upgrades lead me to this thread and now I'm a member. I definitely hear you. I've been looking in to turning my 03 Echo in to a soft roader. I bought it for 2k (clear coat was cooked) back in 2021. I managed to lose my license in it within first 3 weeks. I HUGELY underestimated how much up and go it has. Although on fresh tyres, previous owner went cheap. In the wet, driving hard, I was spinning until 3rd gear/ or around 75kmh. Have been playing around with it, looking at suspension upgrades, bash plates etc, even a snorkel 😂 but best I've been able to come across so far would be swapping suspension and wheels from a Jimny or similar. Would require a bit of custom modifications and therefore engineering certificate etc. There already seems to be some great posts in here. Definitely suspension and air flow seme to be the go. Since we have the old cable 🚠 based throttle, unfortunately we can't do drive-by-wire. I was introduced to that by a workmates 06? Hilux 4x2... That thing pulled *HARD* just from changing the mode selected on the DBW. V6 obviously but yeah. Definitely following this thread and gonna pop the air filter next 👍🏽 👍🏽

      Just wanted to add this here since I've just been through the very same dilemma and for some reason it's so difficult to find reliable info on the 'net for Australian cars. The globe does just pull out from that holder (referring to OP's posted photos). I was worried, too, and even found someone saying to undo those metal clips latched onto the sides of the plastic body. Mine was tight as anything but just had to grab the glass (it's actually quite strong - but be as gentle as practicable) and just wiggle the globe assembly back and forth while pulling on the globe. Eventually it will start to move a little and just keep wiggling and pulling until it comes out of its socket. What I haven't worked out yet is how to get the new globe back in the headlight assembly (on the passenger side with very limited room) without the new globe bumping into every piece of metal and plastic in that limited space and then how to get the holder aligned properly in the hole and pressed in deeply enough for it to latch (with a twist) back in to place. Possibly I didn't seat the globe down far enough when I inserted it back into that. holder. After that I need to tackle the front parking lights on both sides. So far (per a US video) I may need to go in from the wheel well? Crikey.

      2020 Corolla service question

      Hey guys! just purchased my first ever Toyota. December 2020 Corolla accent sport 2.0L with 32k on the clock. When I purchased it I looked at the log book and it had a service at 16’000km and one at 32’000km. Not thinking too much more about it after getting it I’ve realised the service between 16k and 32k was 2.5 years apart!! 😫 kilometer wise it’s not too far off but not having a service for 2.5 years is concerning to me as someone who’s very passionate about doing oil changes very regularly and keeping on top of my maintenance of a car! I can’t see any sludge or anything under the oil cap and it looks clean inside but I wanted to get your thoughts on any long term impacts this could have, and any suggestions on how I can rectify it! the last oil change was done about 2 weeks ago and I’ll definitely make sure I do another oil change no longer than in 6 months time. also what’s a good amount of time between gearbox services for a Toyota Corolla (intend to do it more often than what the log book suggests)

      Help - Blowing white smoke

      Have you also given the vacuum hose a clean i.e.with a spray of de-greaser. Maybe be also give the throttle body a cleaner which may help to remove any oil related film in the intake. something else that i did was to fit an oil catch can which has since been removed. The real solution to fix this white smoke issue was to thoroughly clean the valve cover and also any oil sludge build up in the valve train. Something else that i did as temporary measure and to confirm that it was oil sludge build up issue was to temporarily disconnect the PCV valve from the valve cover. I taped off the pcv valve so it was unable to suck in an excessive amount of air. I also blocked the valve cover hole opening with some filtering material. The white smoke on start up should stop within a few weeks. If it continues, I would do another clean of the front valve cover with particular attention to the section leading to the pcv valve.
