So, I checked my oil today and it is getting quite black. And I need someone to help me to decide to change it or not! Reason I ask is that I don't do 15,000K a year and so all of my services would be by date, not KM.

My last service was 60K and now I'm sitting on 66,000. It would take me at least another couple of months to cover 1500KM for my 67500 additional service. But upon inspection my oil is quite black. Kind of like this dude :ph34r:

My next scheduled service is next year on April (forth month). But I don't want to wait that long because the oil is looking very unhealthy.

I will be doing this additional service myself and do my scheduled service at my mechanic to get the log book stamped as I am still under warranty.

Soooo, what should I do :S. Wait(If I wait, my next service is still 7 months away, counting from october), service it myself, etc :help::unsure:

To be honest, if I had the money I wouldn't even think twice about not doing it but since I am strapped for cash these days it's a hard choice.

edit: Reason for why my oil would be black so quickly after only 6000KM since last service would be because I start stop my car a lot and it does a lot of short trips (its mainly local).

double edit: I'll be using Penrite HPR5. This **** costs a pretty penny. If you think there is better oil around the same price ($46 for 5 litres) please do tell :)

With the type of driving you are doing, short trips, stop start etc which I would recon be classified as extreme I would suggest you check your owners manual which should recommend earlier oil changes for such conditions. Probably be wise to change your oil every 6 months eg: 7500Ks.If you have just changed your oil from non or semi synthetic to a fully synthetic oil, the change could quite possibly be the reason for the oil turning black, due to better scavenging of sediments left by the other oils.

why not buy the oil , buy the filter and change yourself or have a VIC member help you out!

+2. penrite hpr5 ftw. im running it in my engine now and i'm finally able to change every 10,000km. even after yday's cruise of hard driving, the oil is still looking honey comb colour. it did consume abit of oil but thats expected. esp of a 7 yr old car

Also, thanks for everyone else who replied. Appreciate it. Will see what I do when I creep closer to the service time.

Yeah, but your engine is probably hot a lot of the time. Sometimes I make it to my destination without the car at 100% operating temperature.

Sorry I should refrase it . I do 7500km (or 6 months) oil and filter change and every 15000km I take car for the book service. I also provide my own oil Super GTO 10W-30. However I will be looking to change it to fully synthetic one.

Yes I went there and had my transmission serviced. They did a proper flush as well. Also I got them to install new disks and brake pads.

On top of that they were more than happy for me to be there and observe the whole process.

Also I always change oil while engine is hot. When I come home from work (24km drive) I remove engine oil cup and oil dipstick and then straight under the car and drain the hot oil (use thick rubber glow for a protection). Have a shower, diner and watch tv for a while. 2 hours later I go back and complete oil change. I know it might be a little overkill but it really does a trick. After replacing oil with the new one I can hardly see where is the oil level on the stick. This is what I hate about dealer service. They leave the car in the yard for the period of time and then change oil while the engine is cold and not allowing for the proper drainage.

That's not overkill, leaving it for around 5-6 hours like I sometimes do is.

      Ticking Hilux 5le

      Hi all, got a 2004 diesel 4x4 Hilux with the 5le motor in it. 250,000 kilometres, i’m the second owner and have had it about 9 months. Since I bought it there has always been a constant ticking noise while driving (anywhere over 1200rpm) but not while idling. Does it while accelerating, maintaining speed and decelerating. No real impact on power and I get about 12.5L per 100km. I never worried about it too much but it’s starting to ***** me off a bit. I’ll link a video below, any clues what could be causing the noise?

      Thanks for the post Aldo. Googling echo upgrades lead me to this thread and now I'm a member. I definitely hear you. I've been looking in to turning my 03 Echo in to a soft roader. I bought it for 2k (clear coat was cooked) back in 2021. I managed to lose my license in it within first 3 weeks. I HUGELY underestimated how much up and go it has. Although on fresh tyres, previous owner went cheap. In the wet, driving hard, I was spinning until 3rd gear/ or around 75kmh. Have been playing around with it, looking at suspension upgrades, bash plates etc, even a snorkel 😂 but best I've been able to come across so far would be swapping suspension and wheels from a Jimny or similar. Would require a bit of custom modifications and therefore engineering certificate etc. There already seems to be some great posts in here. Definitely suspension and air flow seme to be the go. Since we have the old cable 🚠 based throttle, unfortunately we can't do drive-by-wire. I was introduced to that by a workmates 06? Hilux 4x2... That thing pulled *HARD* just from changing the mode selected on the DBW. V6 obviously but yeah. Definitely following this thread and gonna pop the air filter next 👍🏽 👍🏽

      Removing low beam bulb 2014 Camry

      Just wanted to add this here since I've just been through the very same dilemma and for some reason it's so difficult to find reliable info on the 'net for Australian cars. The globe does just pull out from that holder (referring to OP's posted photos). I was worried, too, and even found someone saying to undo those metal clips latched onto the sides of the plastic body. Mine was tight as anything but just had to grab the glass (it's actually quite strong - but be as gentle as practicable) and just wiggle the globe assembly back and forth while pulling on the globe. Eventually it will start to move a little and just keep wiggling and pulling until it comes out of its socket. What I haven't worked out yet is how to get the new globe back in the headlight assembly (on the passenger side with very limited room) without the new globe bumping into every piece of metal and plastic in that limited space and then how to get the holder aligned properly in the hole and pressed in deeply enough for it to latch (with a twist) back in to place. Possibly I didn't seat the globe down far enough when I inserted it back into that. holder. After that I need to tackle the front parking lights on both sides. So far (per a US video) I may need to go in from the wheel well? Crikey.

      2020 Corolla service question

      Hey guys! just purchased my first ever Toyota. December 2020 Corolla accent sport 2.0L with 32k on the clock. When I purchased it I looked at the log book and it had a service at 16’000km and one at 32’000km. Not thinking too much more about it after getting it I’ve realised the service between 16k and 32k was 2.5 years apart!! 😫 kilometer wise it’s not too far off but not having a service for 2.5 years is concerning to me as someone who’s very passionate about doing oil changes very regularly and keeping on top of my maintenance of a car! I can’t see any sludge or anything under the oil cap and it looks clean inside but I wanted to get your thoughts on any long term impacts this could have, and any suggestions on how I can rectify it! the last oil change was done about 2 weeks ago and I’ll definitely make sure I do another oil change no longer than in 6 months time. also what’s a good amount of time between gearbox services for a Toyota Corolla (intend to do it more often than what the log book suggests)

      Help - Blowing white smoke

      Have you also given the vacuum hose a clean i.e.with a spray of de-greaser. Maybe be also give the throttle body a cleaner which may help to remove any oil related film in the intake. something else that i did was to fit an oil catch can which has since been removed. The real solution to fix this white smoke issue was to thoroughly clean the valve cover and also any oil sludge build up in the valve train. Something else that i did as temporary measure and to confirm that it was oil sludge build up issue was to temporarily disconnect the PCV valve from the valve cover. I taped off the pcv valve so it was unable to suck in an excessive amount of air. I also blocked the valve cover hole opening with some filtering material. The white smoke on start up should stop within a few weeks. If it continues, I would do another clean of the front valve cover with particular attention to the section leading to the pcv valve.
