Hi there,

The speedometer in my car (98 Camry V6 Csi) is not working, and the check engine light is flashing.

I just came back from the mechanic and he checked the speed sensor and speedometer - which was ok.

He suspected that the gear in transmission for speedo sensor collapsed, and this will required transmission removal to repair. The quote was a whopping $1200!

How many speed sensors are there altogether, and from my reading online, there is a sensor just sitting at the back of the transmission....but not inside? Does the mechanic's diagnosis make sense to you guys?

Have a look at this web link, which is the manual for Gen4 Automatic_Transaxle http://www.camrystuff.com/manuals/Gen4/Automatic_Transaxle_V6_A541E.pdf

If you insert in the Adobe Reader Search box "speed" and search for that word, you will find many entries for speed - sensors throughout the manual.

The file is 5 Mb in size and has 174 pages.

This is the common web link for the various manuals covering the Gen4 Series.
