2005 Camry revving high at start up

Hi

I have just purchased a 2005 Camry Altise limited 4 cylinder. When I start it first up it revs at about 2000rpm for 20-30secs then drops to about 1100rpm. This happens no matter what the outside temp is 20-35 degrees Celsius. I wait for the revs to drop before putting it in to drive. After a drive I can shut it off and restart and it idles at 1100rpm straight away. I have read conflicting views on the net about whether this is normal and would like a definitive answer if I could.

This is definitely normal for a cold start. Regardless of the outside temperature, if the engine itself is cold, it will start at about double or so it's normal idle revs.

No worries. You procedure of waiting for the revs to go to normal before putting it into gear is good practice as well. From being around hotels for work and in their car-parks, I see valets just start the car and put it in gear straight away. Hearing the revs drop down from their cold start revs to what it is when in gear just doesn't sound natural.
