Hi. yes as topic states I am slowly looking at getting another car and ditching my ae92 corolla. My budget is approximately $15g maybe more maybe less depends. Anyways I wanna get a non-turbo straight 6 Supra the new 1Js. Now it is worth getting a n/a supra? And which is better to get it in manual or auto transmission? How far off insurance is it differ from turbo Supra? Oh yeah I am 20 so turbo is a no go as I can afford it but can't risk it all to insurance coz I still study. Or do you think don't even bother with a supra??

a 1993 or newer non turbo supra (mk4) with 2jzge will set you back anywhere between 18-25 grand (much more than that and why would you bother).....

a turbo newer supra (mk4) is anywhere from 25k upwards....

manual or auto is up to you - it's your car - how do you like to drive?

a mark 3 supra turbo sells from anywhere between 10 - 20grand.........

Personally I can't see any point at all in a N/A supra --> it's big, it's heavy, they're not overly quick but they sure look nice...

If I was going to buy a supra (and again this is a personal thing) I would be saving up the extra to buy a TT Mk4 RZ supra.

all of what paradox sed was right. except its not that expensive for a MA70, GA70 woteva..., got my GA70 for $5500 needing a new paintjob. Look in the Trading Post and see the variations. Not sure where ur from, but in SA turbos can be insured through "Just Car Insurance" to under 21yr olds(im 18). the MA70 has the 1JZ engine and has more power than the GA70 TT, keep that in mind.

i understand that this was a while ago, but i hope this will help.

In all honesty, its not worth buying N/A Supra. For me at least. Its like what Paradox said, its heavy and the power from that straight 6 in N/A form is not enough to propel the car to match its good looks. However, whenever you drive a Supra, you will turn head because it is supralicious, and if you just want a cruiser ride perhaps n/a form is enough.

A desired version is year 1998 above with twin turbo and back to 6 speed Getrac (model year 95 - 96 is down to 5 speed), and, you guessed it, VVT-i equiped. Cost around $45,000 plus.

haha, maybe when I am 25 years old, I can throw around which to get, a Celica for roaring n/a 2zz-ge, or TT Supra for tourqe king 2jz-gte. Start saving now.

last time i checked N/A supra costs around $18-$25. Twin Turbo Supra costs $30,000+

My brother got a 1998 TT Supra (VVT-i) and it only has done 49,000km (it's a Track Car now). couple of years ago he bought a N/A Supra for $25,000 (before this he used to have the Subaru WRX STi, it was quick but not as quick as the TT Supra). Peformance in the N/A Supra is slow compared to the TT Supra is so much quicker and they've got massive brakes.

If you're thinking of getting the Supra, get a TT Supra, they're A BEAST!! also get it with TRACTION CONTROL.

Everyone here has spoken the truth regarding performance.

A twin turbo is always going to be faster than a non turbo, but all out speed isn't the only thing to consider

when buying a car.

I have a 1994 Aerotop Supra (N/A) and whilst its certainly not going to keep up with a TT Supra, the N/A's were never intended to, just as the NA Celicas, NA Silvias or Skylines were never meant to produce the same performance figures as their turbo cousins.

What it really comes down to is cost, reliability (cost), and the model you really want (and the cost :D ).

Crap condition 1993 on (JZA80) Supras seem to start at around the $15,000 mark these days with aerotops being roughly $5K on top of base price, and TT starting from $5-10K on top of base price.

Quality and import date play a big part in price as anything much less than about $18K that was imported before early this year, you will really want to get checked out as there are lots of dodgy examples floating around.

Non Turbos (NA) will go for anywhere up to about the $25K mark for a good example, a little more for a post - 1999 model in perfect condition, whereas thats about the starting point for the TT's (particularly the 6sp manuals). As one of the others said, manual or auto is your choice, but the autos are far more common, and often have not been as abused as their manual counterparts.

As you are 20, I can tell you right now that even if you could get insurance for the TT it would be a killer, some companies charge well in excess of twice the price for comprehensive TT's insurance over the NA alternative.

Whilst the NA's are big heavy cars, they are still fun to drive and you're not going to find a better car, especially the aerotop, for cruising in.

Sing out if you want more info, I can point you in the direction of some Supra addicts that can really give all the ins and outs of owning a Supra.

Sorry for the big ramble, just wanted to point out that TT isn't always the ONLY option to go with.

hey guys, new to the forum, really great~ came across it when i typed up some search on google about the N/A supra.

in response to hatchetman it proved to be of a BIG help to me.. and of course the rest of you guys..

i was actually looking into buy a supra non turbo myself as well ever since i have given up on the non turbo mr2 due to the fact that its too old and has WAY too many kms... i have been looking around ALOT for mr2 and after the 15 year rule set in, there arnet anymore decent ones comming in~ and the ones ehre are pretty poor..

i was wondering...

1) i was gonna import a non turbo supra from prestige motorsports for about 15k... around the model... about 94-95.. is it a wise decision to import one? it roughly has about.. 50,000kms to 100,000kms

2) what is the maintainence like on a supra non turbo? pretty reliable? with me, i dont mind about performance, i juss care about the after costs of buying the non turbo supra because i am just a uni student:)

3) what is the fuel consumption like?

4) would it be expensive to insure it for third party property by just cars?

I heard its a real bitch to import, the fact that you might have a chance you cant pass compliance and so your car would then have to be sent back to Japan or get destroyed.

Im starting to look at N/A Supras myself, cant seem to afford a new 05 Sportivo now, gonna take too long to get the $$$.

So looking to spend <$20,000 for a NA Supra.

Reading in the supraforums, people said they have been getting about 400+km out of a tank, depending highway city driving etc.

Some amazing figures TT owners get, like 500Km out of a tank even with some spirited driving or something, jeee neat inline 6 engine Toyota made.

Now i just have to convince my parents the Supra is a nice car and its practicle.

rkim2312: Glad my tidbits were helpful to you, the NA really is a great car, and just goes to prove that turbo isn't everything in a sports car (especially when laws and insurance don't allow it!).

In answer to your questions, I can offer the following:

1) I looked into this option when I was searching for my car, but ultimately bought one already on the road in Aus. as I didn't like the idea of buying a car sight unseen and with the possibility of major costs if the car was not up to standards for compliance. I would expect that importing is relatively safe if you go through the right import company as many people seem to do this, but I have no first hand experiences myself to make a judgement.

2) Going back to my original post, it depends entirely on the condition of the car, but I can tell you that mine has been running like a dream since the day I got it, and I have only done the regular servicing (through a Toyota Import specialist who knows these cars). Overall its not been different from any other car to service.

3) All depends on how heavy your right foot is :) But seriously, I have driven mine to QLD twice and on the open road mine got much better consumption than my brand new 2001 Mazda SP20 (previous car). This is a car that LOVES the open road! City cycles I average anywhere between about 380Km (my lowest) up to about 450Km's or a little more depending how hard I drive (using only 98Octane fuel).

Also be aware that the TT's generally have slightly larger tanks than the NA's so direct tank to tank comparisons may be skewed slightly.

4) Not sure, I have full comp. with Just Car (which is pretty reasonable after doing lots of shopping around), but give them a call and find out.

I heard getting aerotop Supra are sorta risky since structure of the chassis would be weakened without the roof on so when taking corners in sprited driving, it causes more flex.

Although it would be cool for those summer nights.

My preference right now is a white Supra NA manual. One with side skirts and rear pods would be heaps good and with 18inch wheels.

I won't disagree that when the top is off they do tend to flex more, but this is something that you get used to as an aerotop owner, and I wouldn't say its at all risky, unless you are driving it like a madman (in which case any car would be risky :blink: ). The great thing about them is nice days or nights they are awesome for cruising around in and if the weather is bad you have a hard top - best of both worlds really :D

Take a look at the link I sent, mine has 18's and is set at standard factory height (but was extremely low when I bought it), so that should give you a good idea with a subtle kit (skirts, front lip and rear pods) they look great!

so i might have to go with prestigemotorsport.com.au because they have a quite a few for a decent price...

and a targa top would definately be a preference because as u said, u get the best of both.

Haven't had to order parts myself, but the supra's are so common in Aus now that parts are plentiful, and can be sourced from heaps of places so you can shop around.

The fuel consumption all comes down to how much driving you actually do, and how heavy your right foot is :) - oh and the type of fuel you use, theres a big price difference in high octane fuel (98 or 100RON) vs. standard unleaded, but I can say that the 2JZ's love the good quality stuff (I run mine exclusively on at least 98RON fuel).

You could get away with $40-50 per week on fuel but it depends on the Km's you do as I said above.

Also just be aware that the "low KM" imports are generally (not always) wound back medium KM cars, the only way to know, other than external signs of wear and tear, is to check the odometer for signs of tampering, a parts guy showed me a few spare odometers he had that were second hand and the marks from the screwdrivers etc. used to reset the clocks (as they are digital on the Supras) were quite bad on some. Only problem with this method, is you need to remove the odo from the dash to check it.

Anyhoo, GL with your search I hope you find a car that you are happy with, and xGSiR: even though mine is red, I've always liked the Supra in white with a nice clean bodykit they look stunning! ;)

alot of them have low kms.. but i guess u'll never know untill u check it...

Importing will take a while dude, time consuming but then you can could save a few thousand.

What is your budget anyway? If you going to get a NA Supra, might as well buy local, because the most you would save if your just buying a TT that is.

Don't bother looking for a modified one to import, as the new regulations means you will need to return the car to factory standard before it can be complianced anyways (more cost involved buying original toyota parts to do this!).

Also make sure you budget more than what the sale price is as all the additional costs to import can add up, last thing you want is to finally get your car into the country and not be able to afford to get it complied and registered :(

True, its not a quick process at all from what I have been told, expect to wait! - or buy local as xGSiR says.

Import dealers hike the prices up, but theres usually a few good private sale deals going (just get the car checked before buying!).

Just found this lol. This is classic. Amount of posts referring to twin turbo's (even when he specified that insurance would be too much for him) is amazing :lol:

A year has passed, and I'm sure your riding around in one...but if not:

They look unreal. So what if it's an n/a? It'll get you from A to B in style and it'll be super reliable ;)

On the topic of insurance don't necessarily let it scare you off Turbos, get quotes for both first.

I was considering getting a Supra a little while back and so made inquiries with NRMA (for a laugh) and Shanons (for reality) and found something very disturbing.

Fully comp for an old codger like myself (over 30) a turbo Supra is actually cheaper (but not by much) than a n/a Supra for both companies (it's just that NRMA was more than 2x Shanons).

depends on how you want to drive it ??.... if you want to drive fast get an N/A aw11.... if you want a stylish car that will impress girls, get a N/A supra.... both great cars.

and ma70 has a 7m motor.. not a 1jz.

jza70 have a 1j.

If you own a Supra, you'll start to grow light brown / blonde hair, lose ****loads of weight, become toned, eyes will go blue and you'll all of a sudden start going out with this really hot chick called 'Mia'.
