Just wondering if any one is getting as poor economy as i am with their hilux.

I just bought a 2009 hilux extra cab diesel with 20,000km's on the clock. I have heard people on some forums complaining about only getting 500 to 550 km,s out of theirs, I would kill for that, i am lucky to get 450km,s to a tank (65lts approx.) quite a dismal performance in any ones opinion i would think. I have tool box's and a fair load on her (approx. 2.7 tons all up) but even when not loaded at all is not much better. Tyres are 265/75 which is about a 32" i think, probably not helping either but should not be causing that much of a problem. I have fitted a DP chip in hope of helping a bit and a snorkle but to no avail. I just purchased a beudesert exaust system but im sure this will not help to much either. I have a mate with exactly the same model but ute back and he's telling me he gets 700km,s to a tank, some thing cant be right here surely? Can any one help me with this problem as its doing my head and wallet in?

I got an 06 hilux d4d - i put the exhaust and snorkel on - around town i was getting around 650km, highway - up and over 700km. A few easy things you could try if you havnt already;

Make sure you have a clean air filter - clogged ones will hurt performance and increase fuel economy. With that, clean your MAF sensor - if your on newhilux.net there is a good write up on it. CRC actually make a product to do this job, contact cleaner does the same thing.

Also if you dont do it - replace the fuel filter (or get it done on your next service) and you should do that every second service or so at least - even better if you do it every service.

If it still has crappy economy - the injectors may need attention. The common rail injectors that toyota use have built themselves a bad reputation because of all the faults they can have. Once again newhilux.net has miles of info on it so prob be worth getting on there if your not already. You wana hope its not injectors - your back pocket will know all about it if it is!

Having bigger tyres (ie 265x75) will hurt your economy for sure - since fitting my 265's im pretty sure my ecomomy has fallen - but i still got just under half a tank left and have done 400kms of city driving..

Hope this helps!
