Hello Have a 22r 2.4 litre reco gem petrol motor in a rn85r 1989 hilux. At 40000 klms timing chain was replaced due to loud rattle, confirmed by removal of tappet cover.Job was done by japanese auto clinic so the correct length chain would have been used, was $65 for the chain.Still have the rattle but not as severe, have also reduced the frequency by using a shorter oil filter.Rattle was loud today when doing oil+filter change.Enquired with another mechanic and he mentioned that gem shave the block and the head, this would reduce the distance between the top and bottom sprocket and could be the problem.Could you just remove a link in the chain or does any one else have any suggestions.Bought the ute with the reco+the auto clinic was a very negative experience, shall not return.Any help appreciated.Less than 3000 klms on new chain Thank you

Hello once again john62 its been a while since we last heard from you.Mate Gem do machine their heads and blocks after all it is a common practice when it comes to reconditioning, but we are talking in (thousand of an inch)in the old school terminology and to say that may be the cause of your timing chain rattle is bullsh*t--pardon the french--.When you had the chain replaced ARE YOU sure they REPLACED both the chain guides and the hydraulic chain tensioner,as its only a simple job of removal and installing the new parts especially when the timing cover is removed,it sounds to me like they took off the rocker cover, removed the joining link in the chain and wound a new one on. Dont get me wrong there is nothing wrong with doing it that way but the tensioner and guides would not of been replaced and I am confident if they were done your problem would be solved.

You answered the question when you said a smaller filter helped ,thats because the oil pressure is getting to the tensioner quicker, rather than wait for the larger filter to fill up.But most filters now contain an anti drain back valve to eliminate this, cheers CONROD
