Hey I was wondering, how do I replace the AC crompressor in my car? (4 cylinder Camry manual)

I was told it's a $600 - $800 job if a mechanic does it but I know someone who has a working one so I'm thinking of changing it myself

Thanks in advance

You can't legally change it yourself. Do you have an air conditioning ticket or all the required specialist tools? If not pay the money or deal with no air conditioning. You will need to get it regassed anyways, so it won't work out any cheaper doing it yourself.

Damn, I was hoping it was something I can do but I guess not. I'm not too worried about it though.

Thanks for answering btw

Where do you live. I may be able to get a compressor at a good price. Also may be able to direct you to a decent A/C fitter who won't rip you off.

Any numbers on the old one??

Ok I can't see numbers on it

Sorry but I have been a bit busy in the last few days

Can you tell me the exact model (MCV10 - SXV10 - SXV11) and the month of manufacture.

Maybe this link may help to ID the one you need.

I will have a look Monday morning and get a price for you

This is a bit scary. I have been quoted $530.00 plus GST for a new genuine compressor. There are some re-manufactured ones available but they are only about 80-100 cheaper.

Most likely compressor only.

Yeah definitely that is for the compressor only. It has been a few years since I worked with A/C parts and I got a real shock when I was told the price. I would hate to know what the retail price would be.

I bought one for my in-laws 95 Camry from the place I worked for previously and it cost about $300.00 but those prices seem to be a thing of the past.

Sorry about getting your hopes up
