Hey guys

I have just been doing an oil and filter change on my camry and it's such a pain in the *****, trying to get the oil filter off. I bought some filter pliers this morning thinking it would help but, because off where the filter is on these cars its really hard to try and twist it off. Anyone with a similar model please give me some hints to try and get this thing off.

Cheers

Wellsie

If it's the V6 model I use my filter remover . The type I have is a black Nylon ( I think ) strap that goes around the filter. 1/2 inch ratchet tightens around it until it loosens...Works a treat. - Now I just figure out how to stop the oil leaking out onto the exhaust

First problem is it sounds like it is too tightly put on.

I have also found filter.wrenches useless so i found:

- Take off the heatshield

- Bang the top of the filter so you can get a better grip

- screwdriver method

To assist in the future:

- make sure it isn't put on so tightly

- use a filter with a removal nut (K&N HP-1002)

As for the leaking bit? Impossible to not make it leak. :P

And I forgot to mention as well, That as much as I like the Camry's I have never seen a car that has a habit of locking on oil filters as firmly as these do. You may gently tighten them on using one hand only and yes I do apply a film of oil to the new rubber O ring seal, But come filter change time both hands and all your strength and they still won't budge.

I find the strap type as mentioned by someone else works fine..Also take the heat shield off, just give you that lttle bit of extra room..Use it on nmy Corolla as well.. Leaky oil filter, never had one..

When you dont put it on too tight, they are pretty much twist off by hand...

What this guy said.

I stopped buying K&N oil filters cause the removal nut is redundant.

Buy a genuine Toyota oil filter removal tool, and never have to worry about stuck oil filters or bruised knuckles again. Heaps better than any strap, ratchet or claw-type tool you can get from Supercrap/Repco etc.
