No reversing light on my Camry

Hi guys,

My reverse light would not come on when the reverse gear is engaged. I checked the owner's manual and it seems the rear lights are all on one fuse. Braking and parking lights are all functional except this reversing light. I checked the bulbs they all seem good. I searched the internet and people suggest that there should be a switch near the gear box, however this for the camry with auto gearbox. My camry has manual gearbox and i don't see any switch near gear stick area. Camry is 4 cyl 2002 model.

Any thoughts?

Hard to diagnose without seeing the car.

First thing I would do, turn ignition on and engage into reverse and use the circuit tester on the reverse lamps to see if there are any currents running through them. If yes, try changing your globes, if no, check all your fuses. If still no luck, take it to your local mechanics for further testing.

I have been having an intermittant issue with my reverse lights not working at times. Sometimes they work no problems and other times I need to wriggle the gearstick around whilst in reverse which seems to do the trick.

I suspect the problem is the reverse light switch, which is located on the gearbox underneath the car. I am told that manual Camrys are known to have issues with the switch, which I would assume after 13 years has accumulated a fair amount of corrosion / dirt. The part is not that expensive either, I was quoted under $90 from Toyota.
