Hi,

I have a Hiace Camper Van auto 1985 YH with original motor, low 150,000 kms. The van is in pristine condition, body paint excellent , trakka fitout in perfect, very clean, like new condition. The original owner was fastidious with the van.

About a year ago I had problems with the steering column and sourced out a replacement at the wreckers. The mechanic fitted the new steering column but unfortunately the auto transmission column gear shift indicator disappeared. I didn`t want to sound like a whinger as I was just so pleased to have the van operational again. I am also female and don`t have much mechanical knowledge.

I just sourced a after market new steering column and asked another mechanic to replace the steering column again [extra expense I know but I felt by putting a new one in they are hard to get would guarantee longevity].

I asked the mechanic if it was possible to purchase a new gear shift indicator [ shows if gear engaged in drive, reverse etc;]

Really hard to get and no wrecker I could find throughout Australia had one.

The mechanic talked to Toyota he has not much knowledge with this and thinks they did not use a needle indicator in that model but used a globe type arrangement. I am sure it was a needle type. Has anyone any suggestions or even a way of glueing a piece of metal painted orange [original was] to the cable , otherwise I can not get a a roadworthy for this vehicle if i want to sell it in the future. I live in Brisbane.

The van has cost me $12,000.00 in total and now to think I can`t get a roadworthy worries me. Thanks.

Pleased to report another mechanic foound there was a crimped wire and a missing bub, all fixed, fantastic!!!
