Performance upgrades.

Hey guys.

I am new to this sort of thing, and in general do not have a broad knowledge of cars at all. I do drive a 1991 Toyota Celica SX and I just wanted to know what sort of things I could do to boost the performance of my car, any help is good.

Thank you.

PS. please use simple talk, I really dont know what im talking about.

Exhaust system. Probably a 2.5 inch system would suffice for the celica.

Air Intake (filter) kit - K&N would surely make one.

Extractors maybe?

That will get you started.

Would you recommend any engine change?

For sure. But it's all a budget thing... If your budget allows - go for a 3SGTE engine conversion. One of the better Toyota engines around and can make serious power.

Only thing I don't know about celica specific is if your standard gearbox will be okay with a 3SGTE - as that engine came in the all wheel drive GT4 model.

Thanks for that mate, anything else you think could enhance performance at all, or should I just stick to the Exhaust, Air Intake Kit and Extractors?

The only real performance gain in the Celica would be the 3S-GTE engine swap or 5S-FTE (5S-FE Turbo) Conversion. Both cost $$$$$ in Australia.

As stated, a good high-flow exhaust and a decent air filter will help, but you will not notice any real improvement in daily driving. (I only noticed a small increase in responsiveness when I did my exhaust)

You could also get some brand new spark plugs and wiring. New oil and filter, and so on.... A replacement of aging parts can make a world of difference...

Best mod if the car is manuel is to do a normal 3sge engine swap. They are the Japanese motors and came in the mr2 and Celica in Japan. They have 113kw and rev a lot faster and better that the normal engine you have. They are not expensive and the conversion is bolt in and simple.

If you wanted to keep your engine, i would do a 5sge, which is a 3sge head and a few others things swapped over and you will have a nice engine that is torque down low and able to rev higher and nicer than before.

If you want standard engine, just do exhaust and intake, and service the crap out of the engine and change the fuel filter. That is about it really

If the effort is taken to complete a 5S-GE, you might as well put a turbo on, because it is a fairly big job.

Depends how reliable you want it. It can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be.
