distrubutor timing 22R 2.4L 4 petrol carby

i've just completed a top end rebiuld on my 1986 toyota hilux 4X4 ute, running a 22R engine, she wants to live but she just does not seem to want to fire. i got no idea how to do the timing from the distrubutor end, she just keeps missfiring.

i really want her to live once more, she has been parked up for 12 months getting all the work done, Can any one give me any hints or pointers on how to ensure i get the firing timing correct?

Start by making sure your valve timing is correct, then check that the distributor is aligned on the correct teeth.

Valve timing:

Find TDC on the compression stroke in cylinder 1; this can be done by removing the rocker cover, remove spark plug from front cylinder, turn crankshaft clockwise until air is pushed out of the spark plug hole, then continue turning until the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley is at 0 degrees. At this point, on the rear most cylinder, one valve should be all the way up and the other just starting to move down. If that is correct, then your valve timing is correct. If you have any problems here, post back for further instruction.

Whilst still at top dead centre, check distributor as follows:

Ensure the rotor is aligned at approximately the same location as the no 1 point on the dizzy cap, if not, remove dizzy and reinsert one tooth at a time in the relevant direction. If you can't compleatly reinsert the dizzy there may be a key at the bottom of the hole where the distributor sits, use a flat head screw driver to adjust accordingly. Once the rotor is pointing in the right direction, screw the dizzy cap back down onto the dizzy. On the side of the dizzy is a 12 mm bolt , leave that loose (but tight at the same time).

Next, check that the vacuume advance diaphragm is serviceable by blowing and sucking through the vacuum hose attached to it. If you can freely blow or suck through it, the diaphragm is buggered, and should be replaced (it's much easyier to replace the whole dizzy). Once all this is done, try to start the motor, you may need to hold the gas open slightly to get it to run. When it runs, attach a timing light and check timing. The timing can be adjusted by slightly turning the dizzy. Once the timing is correct ( should be about 4 degrees), tighten the 12 mm bolt on the side of the dizzy.

Check and adjust the idle speed and mixture screws on the carby as needed to obtain the correct isle speed ( should be about 850 rpm )

Your motor should now be running normally, if it's not, then the next thing to check would be fuel delivery. This relates to the condition of the carby.

I had the same issues with my 87 Hilux yn58 with the 4y-c motor, and this is what worked for me.

Thanks, i got her working last weekend. it was just the timing... it was off... by 180 degree's haha. she lives now thou, runs like a damn dream! lol, cheers and beers mate.
