My daughter smashed a roo tonight and the white resonator bottle was smashed all over the bitumin. What if I just blank off the hole in the intake tube, will it detune the engine and make it guzzle fuel?

You can remove it completely and even leave the hole open and it won't affect your engine.

What purpose does it serve when it is not busted? There must be some reason to build it in the first place.

Resonators in the intake serve a similar purpose (but work through different means) to resonators in the exhaust - they cancel out particular frequencies to make the intake sound quieter.
