Hey guys just bought a dual cab and want to install dual batteries in the rear of the tub. I have a alpha canopy fitted. Just after some ideas on the best setup on where to install.

Pictures would be great.

Cheers

Just a warning:

All electrickery leads NEED to be as short and thick as practical. The more current/power being delivered, the greater the need for both.

Edit: Lower voltages dictate higher currents for the same power delivery. [Power = Volts * Amps] Higher currents require thicker wires to reduce delivery losses

. power loss -=current ^2 * Ohms of wire]

thicker wires are more expensive and more difficult to route on the location.

Ohms= Resistance = resistve co-efficient of material * length/cross sectional area.

These laws are universal, but when dealing with Alternating current, what you are measuring is diferent, so the results seem skewed until you correct for phasors. [Cos(Theta)]. -1<power factor<1. Resonant systems greatly amplify their inputs, but are never self-sustaining. Free Power is usually a dream-though I think I've seen examples of it.

I did this for my Hilux to sent up an inverter in the tray. I can't remember the gauge of the wire but if you get it from an auto electrician ask them what size is best, and get a fuse while your there. I think it was a 75amp fuse I used.

You don't have to run a positive and negative wire to the second battery but I decided I would, at least you know it will be a good earth. There was plenty of room to run it under the car tucked up out of the way and there are grommets in the bottom of the tub to poke the wires up, use a dual battery isolator fitted next to the second battery in the tray, this will stop your accessories from draining your main battery as well as let the alternator charge it. Buy a good quality battery that will suit what you are going to use it for. From memory my battery cost me a couple of hundred, battery box, cable and isolator about the same and then an hour of time to fit it.

lead-Acid batteries do NOT store well - they MUST be made to work at least every few weeks, [less in cold climates] or they will sulphate and fail. Cadmium Sulphite can be bought from Supercheap to delay that process significantly. Abt $10/200ml. NB Must have battery which is NOT maintenance free. IE You have to be able to pour some in each cell. Battery sellers will discourage its use, because it reduces demand for their product. Waste disposal becomes difficult with its use.

Personally I want a maintenance free sealed battery for my second battery. It sits in a confined space which no circulation, the last thing I want is for the gasses from the battery building up in the back. If you do decide to go for this style of battery at least get a sealed box and vent it outside of the tray.

Thanks for all the info guys much appreciated. Back to the drawing board and see if I can draw up a good schematic.

Cheers
