Hi All,

I have been trying to install an OEM Toyota Reverse Camera (Eclipse Brand) onto a Tarago 2011 GLX. After prying open the back of the boot, I

found a plug which looks like a prewiring for an OEM or Genuine Toyota Reverse Camera...

The Eclipse OEM camera clips RIGHT into this so therefore I concluded it was the right plug. This is about as far as I got success

wise.....tried to test it out by putting car into reverse, no pic. So off to the head unit I went!!

Removed plastic trims and found this 20 pin at the back. The car has a 4 inch TFT thing PZQ060-00051 radio...This is common with a lot of

Camrys/Hiluxes/Prados.

I can work out that in the above pic – the Blue/Light Green/Green wires are for the steering controls. The rest like White, White/Black Stripe/Orange/Red/Black should be for Cam +/-, Cam Power +/- and Reverse Trigger Wire but dont know which is which. The boot's wiring in pic 1 consists of Black, White, Grey, Yellow so they dont quite match up...I suspected the White/Black Stripe was the reverse trigger but it isnt.

Used a multimeter and tested all the wires in pic 2, none seemed to be on any voltage at all in reverse or park!! I have a theory that this car is pre-wired if not why would Toyota bother to put a camera adapter plug at the back in the boot door? Secondly those wires in pic 2 MUST BE for something, else why is it there???

What to do next? I have also TESTED this on a friend's Camry 2012 with the same Head Unit but his has a reverse camera factory fitted...and it works, so I've cancelled out any chances the camera itself isn't working. Comparing his, I noticed my Tarago's 20 pinouts are a different position wise.

This is his factory fitted camera 20 pin pinout:

The ONLY other thing I can think of is that a fuse is missing?? Please help with any ideas. Thanks heaps in advance!!

I also would love to hear from anyone who can explain what happens to the wires from the socket in the boot.

My 2007 Tarago Ultima has a socket in the boot, but also a socket flying off leads at the back of the Sat Nav head unit.

Amazingly, when I plugged a new Eclipse camera into the socket behind the head unit, it works when you put the car in reverse. Unfortunatley, when I plug it into the socket in the boot, nothing happens.

I hoped to find the end of the wires from the boot as a plug hidden under the dash that I would just plug in at the dash, but I can't find it...

If you can get hold of a cable trace (any computer network person or telco) will have a device that will put and tone down the wire that you can find with a wireless receiver !

What area are u in ?

It appears to just be a spare socket with no continuity. I managed to trace the socket (four wires tapped together) up till the grommet at the top of the Tarago back door but never went beyond that - couldnt be bothered checking.

Your experiment works because Eclipse is compatiable with the Fujitsu 10 Head Unit, there is no link between the wire that plugs into the Head Unit at the front and the spare socket at the back, if you manage to link it up, it will work.

I had always assumed the spare socket in the boot was a prewired thing, but it isnt and also would have made life easier for Toyota for any retro fit cameras. I actually went to Toyota and asked for a retro fit but they refused as they deem Eclipse as 3rd party and they do not do 3rd party installs. They provided me with a guy who they sub contract this stuff - he wanted $250 for labour and required the whole car to be removed interior wise, I never went ahead with it.

You also have an additional issue - the reverse signal tap.

Good Luck with it all, I've pretty much given up!

In Melbourne - too risky for that, you dont want to be mucking around and deflating any airbags by accident! Costly and dangerous!

Any place that needs to remove the whole interior do not know what they are doing.

It is easy to run new wires from back of van to front for cams,

Have done it many times,

Any good Auto Elect should be able to run the wire for you from the plug on the tail to the other end.

about 1 - 2 hrs work, about $100 - $200

Hi Jungleman,

Logging in as taragonewbie (old fb account got logged out)...anyway, as strange as this sounds, I have received quotes of 3 people:

1. Quoted $180, 2 hours work. Was reluctant to do it because it was a small job and seemed like he had bigger jobs.

2. Quoted $350 min, apparently 4 hours work. Had to "remove all panels" wtf?

3. Quoted $250, said between 1-2 hours work.

This is a relatively easy set up but I'm a bit worried if I do it myself and short circuit it or accidentally zap of the airbag sensor wires. I've worked out where I'd run the wires (back of radio deck, along passenger side door sills through gromit to boot lid), which is what the auto sparkies would do...I have no idea why they'd have to remove so many panels when most videos/professionals seem to run it via the door sills...

Thats best way to run it, if you are worried about airbags,

best to remove -ve from battery.. wait 10 - 30 mins then away you go.

easy as.

If you need any help PM me and i can talk you though it

A bit of an update on this. Whilst I have re-run a new cable from the back of the Tarago itself, I am determined to see where the h*ll that socket at the back ends up.

So far as I can trace the socket (4 wires) merges into a blue jacket (appears as a thick blue wire) from the socket and travels all the way up to the black grommet on top of the back door. It then travels onto the left side of the cargo down the side near the foot of the third row of seats. I don't know the continuity between the roof and that part though, I do see a thick blue cable in the bundle of wires running on the passenger side of the floor.

I suspect it does end up somewhere on the left passenger foot well.

Will keep you all posted on my findings in future!!
