we are looking for a more comfortable alternative seat replacement for our 2001 single cab 4wd ute. I have read in 4x4 action magazine that a toyota sr5 seat will bolt straight in. I have previously tried a 1990 toyota 4runner seat but it did not fit. Has anyone done a seat modification that may be able to give us some advice please.

Late comment. All seat changes are a risk to the safety of the vehicles' passengers, and thus must be approved prior to doing it. If not approved, you could lose your ctp insurance, and be found to be driving an unroadworthy vehicle. NB there are some permitted mods which are automatically approved--see licensing in your state before proceeding.

If its toyota for toyota and it bolts straight up I recon you should be OK.

Anything from the same series should bolt straight up .. so SR5 seaths from a similar age vehicle should be fine.

Not sure how the bolt patterns retain from series to series.

I have heard but not directly witnessed people fitting up market toyota seats into hiluxes by swapping the rails ...supra seats seem to be a candidate.

Another option is to have your seats repacked by an upholsterer that knows what they are doing.

cheers
