Hello

My 2008 Sportivo zr6 decided to dump the radiator fluid on the floor. I am pretty sure the water pump is gone. Car is at the Mechanics who will diagnose my problem but I'm pretty sure it's the feared water pump that needs replacing.

Has anyone had this replaced recently in Perth, and how much was it? I am bracing for a 2k quote (engine needs to come out, but some clever people can change the pump without pulling the engine)

I drove the car a short while keeping an eye on the temp gauge, ensuring it did not go near the red zone. Will I have done any damage to the car? It was steaming but I gave it 30min to cool before setting off again (probably drove 3-4km in total).

Pretty annoying to have to spend $$ on the car but I guess it wasn't too expensive to buy second hand, and this might be the last of it's issues.

Thanks for interest

It is not going to be a cheap repair. Others have replaced the water pump with the engine still in the car. As per attachment, engine mount is loosened and the engine jacked up to give the clearance to remove the water pump. 2GR FE Water Pump Removal Information.doc

The other dreaded issue is the rear VVTi oil line. If it has the original line with the rubber hose mid=section, get your mechanic to replace it with the full metal line. That is a $500-$600 repair job when the engine is still in the car.

Car has done about 115 000 Km

I ended up having the car towed to my mechanic and he'll have a go at it today. He reckons 4hr labour plus pump cost and he's done it before... We'll see, maybe this car still has some legs!

Safer option to have your vehicle towed to the mechanic. Interested to know the final outcome especially the repair time. I think your mechanic will earn the $$$. The other thought that I have had is to consider changing the engine oil depending upon how much extra "heat stress" it endured.

I drive sedately most of the time [2-3000 rpm] and very rarely above 4,000 rpm. Certainly hoping for less stress and longer lifetime of the engine components and accessories.

Hi Campbeam

It cost $720 for me with my mechanic (dad's mate). This included a service and filter change, as well as the alternator belt change. All in all pretty good. Took him one Sunday arvo it seems.

She's back on the road driving.

The tow car company charged $130 (got 3 quotes) and the initial diagnosis cost $65 (Kmart tyre/auto)

I am happy with the outcome.

Cheers!

Thank you for the feedback. It confirms that I will have to allow at least a day; usually 2-3 times longer [for me] than an experienced mechanic.
