What current or future technology would be essential when you upgrade your vehicle?

Recommended Posts

For myself, it is traction control and electronic stability control.

Currently, I have got autonomous emergency braking [AEB] under serious consideration.

Reckon that by the time I join the geriatric driver ranks, insurance companies will have AEB as a “preferred” requirement.

Going from a 2005 Corolla Sportivo to what ever comes next, AEB has definitely saved the car plenty of times with some emergency stops.

Traction control would be a bonus, although the European ZZE123 models came with traction control.

I have driven various newer model cars recently, one thing I do find quite annoying is the lane departure assist. At times I find even when travelling in a straight line in the middle of a lane, it will want to correct the steering.

^^ that looks sensational provided it's reliable. I'm all for any tech that increases driver enjoyment & safety, not ruin it.

I agree ZZT86..Tech is wonderful if it enhances the drive..The future is exciting if we are in control, to feel the road, feel the power, hear the roar and arrive enjoying the experience.

Lets hope that the day doesn't come for a while when we MUST not take the wheel

I can foresee the possibility when only self-drive autonomous vehicles will be able to travel on certain prescribed roads or highways.

Remaining drivers/chauffeurs will then be highly skilled or professionally qualified similar to aircraft pilots subject to regular health checks etc.

Then, when we are in our rocking chairs waiting for the grim reaper [or angels] we will be moaning into our herbal teas about the good old days of when cars had steering wheels.

I understand the Camrys in the US have some 360 degree view in the multimedia screen, presumably from combination of sensors, which helps with parking. I can see how that would be very useful.

Afer looking at this YouTube video, I would be considering more of the braking technology aids e.g. emergency brake assist.

Good reminder to go check my vehicle's tyre pressure particularly after a recent [not serious] mishap with rear tyres losing grip going around a corner on a wet suburban road.

^ All the excellent tips mentioned by John Cadogan in the above video clip are the same preached by advanced driving courses which I believe everyone should do at least once in their lifetime, personally I believe it should be mandatory & perhaps even once a year as re-fresher courses because practice makes perfect.

Todays latest proactive tech such as AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) is a godsend & has the potential to save your car & perhaps your life, unfortunately they're only available on new cars :/

I believe there is some form of mandatory law for learners in NSW to do an advanced driving course, could be wrong though.

Not mandatory, but the hours count for more.  Safer Drivers course counts for 20 hours, and professional instructor lessons are worth triple.

I do remember the instructor lessons counting as triple but that only accounts for 10 lessons I believe, unless it's changed since I got my license.

I know the Safer Drivers course came in a year or 2 after I got on my P's as optional way to get hours.
