The reality is, it is not all on the players.

Theo Epstein--whose Chicago Cubs have won much more Regular-season and postseason games the past few seasons than any other team--apparently represents the new generation of direction that unabashedly values power over speed.

"I prioritize getting on base a lot, hitting the ball From their ballpark and playing excellent defense over team speed," said Epstein, the Cubs' president of baseball operations. "It'd be nice to get a little more athletic and receive a little bit quicker; we would really like to do it. But the stark reality to me is that pace is not as important as getting on base, less important as hitting the ball out of the ballpark, and much less important as defense, though it does bring about defense." Those attributes, emphasized by power, characterized the 2017 World Series champion Astros. Houston finished the postseason with 27 homers, tying the record set by the 2002 San Francisco Giants.

In the World Series, the Astros hit a record 15 homers. That Was one over the Giants gathered in 2002, when they dropped the Fall Classic to the Anaheim Angels in seven matches. The Astros and Dodgers set a World Series record by mixing for 25 homers. This was four more than the Giants and Angels struck in 2002. Alas, the landscape has changed drastically. And in a hurry.

In 2014 -- three years earlier last season's record home-run Explosion (and one year before the onset of Statcast[TM] technology)--Nelson Cruz, with 40 homers for the Baltimore Orioles, was the only participant to transcend 37. That season, just 11 players hit 30 home runs or more. MLB's complete of 4,186 home runs was its lowest since the strike-shortened, 144-game season of 1995. And it was almost 46 percent below last season's record complete. In the spring of 2015, the Cubs' Kris Bryant, who would not be brought up to start his rookie season until mid-April, directed spring coaching hitters with nine homers in 40 at-bats. That is a ratio of one every 4.4 ABs.

j"Oh, yeah, absolutely," said Bryant, who went To hit 26 homers since N.L. Rookie of the Year in 2015 before powering 39 as league MVP in 2016. "I meanI grew up seeing Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs (in 2001), and now guys are talking about 30 being good." Fellow third baseman Josh Donaldson, who'd just moved out of the Oakland A's into the Toronto Blue Jays, was quick to add,"It is lower than that. I think 20 is the new standard --30 is elite electricity."Bryant, however, didn't expect to continue that rate. In Assessing what might be considered a good full-season outputsignal, he stated he thought that the total of 30 was getting the newest 40.

How wrong he was. Embracing Launch Angle and Exit Velocity And promising any ball that he hit on the ground was by mistake, Donaldson led the effort for upward mobility. And, sure enough, as Donaldson started swinging up, things started looking up, also. He collected 41 doubles, 41 homers and 123 RBI in 2015 to become the A.L. MVP.

Maybe some sleight kind of marketing manipulation is Responsible for the present home-run surge--and we do mean sleight (like in Launch Angle, Exit Velocity, maybe changes in chunk ), not slight. None of that can compare, however, with turning a blind eye to steroid use, as MLB and the players' union did for ages. The game finally instituted drug testing with penalties in 2004 and prohibited amphetamines in 2006. "You do not want people to be cynical," Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly told the AP last year because he watched the home-run explosion headed by his own star, Stanton. "I believe what fans really want to know--they love greatness, they love watching the ball go out of this ballpark, you love watching athletes in all

Sports do great and do good things--but I think as a lover, and I include myself in that, you want to know it is coming through hard work and Dedication and talent. Not any other assistance."
