2005 Camry keyless entry, fault found

Hi all i'm new to this forum but  have found it very useful  when diagnosing faults in Toyotas.

I recently bought a Cheap 05 Camry and i'm tidying it up to make it a bit more pleasant.

The clock above the Stereo had a burnt out LCD display so i replaced it with one from the wreckers so now i have a clock and trip computer. As it had no keyless remote a week later i also bought a new aftermarket 2 button Remote entry key fob. Then the saga began.

I could not get the car to recognize the new remote, it would go into programming mode and "PRO" would appear on the clock display but press the remote and nothing. I was doing everything correctly but it simply wouldn't recognize the remote. I spoke to the locksmith i got the remote from and he couldn't see why it wouldn't work, he had sold 100's of them and not one had come back. So then i hit the forums (including this one) to see if it was a known problem. Thanks to this forum i learnt that in acv36/mcv36 camrys the remote receiver is inside the clock display above the stereo....The same part i had replaced with a used one a week earlier. (in US built Camrys the receiver is in the LH rear pillar)

I still had the old display unit with a burnt out LCD display so i swapped them over,  put the car in programming mode and pressed on the remote, straight away it recognized the new remote. i then plugged in the "good" display and the remote still worked, i thought i had fixed it. So i stepped away from the car and tried to lock the car with the remote. It wouldn't lock unless the remote was held right next to a front window or you were inside the car. I plugged the old broken clock back in and tried again this time the remote worked normally at a distance.

So if your having problems with a new remote that the car wont recognize or the remote wont work at a distance and the remote/battery are ok suspect the remote receiver in the clock/display unit.

hello and welcome !

what badge is your camry (sportivo/azura  or altise) reason i ask is i think the ECU is different, and some of the sportivo display functionalities (kms left, distance to.. etc) wont work on the altise.

Mine is a 5 speed Altise Limited. I'm not worried about the trip computer i just like to have a working clock but it would be nice if the keyless entry worked properly too. The clock/display units are rare as hens teeth in the local wrecking yards. I was lucky to find one at all.

I'm thinking of removing the LCD display from the unit with the working clock and soldering it into the original to build 1 good unit with working display and keyless entry that works like it should.

It was an Ebay remote from a seller in Melbourne...The remote WASN'T the problem! Its now coded to the car and works fine with the original broken clock display plugged in. With the replacement display plugged in it only works when inside the car or if held right next to a front door window.

indeed  they are, and they're also easy to break... im on my 3rd one atm,.. and have given up on replacing it,  just have it plugged in for the central locking to work 😛

Jeffy here is an update for you. Your correct that there is a high and low series display The low series only has clock and speed alert, the high series also has trip computer functions. Mine should be a low series with 40 in bold print on the part sticker on the back (part number ends in 040) the high series which is what i have as a replacement has 50 in bold print (part number ends in 050).

i pulled them both apart and the lcd displays are different. The type 50 has a lot more contacts for the LCD display and a different circuit board to suit. So swapping them over is not an option.
